2020 Vosburgh Stakes Handicapping
Although most of this weekend’s stakes action is taking place at Santa Anita in California, New York’s Belmont Park will play host to the (G2) Vosburgh Stakes on Saturday.
A ‘Win And You’re In’ race for the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, the Vosburgh is open to horses aged three and older, going six furlongs on the Belmont dirt.
Six are expected to go to the gate, including last year’s runner-up.

2020 Vosburgh Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Firenze Fire Race Odds: 7-2
A Kentucky Derby entrant in 2018, the connections of Firenze Fire have turned him into a sprinter and he ran second in the 2019 Vosburgh before going on to run fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last year.
A multiple graded-stakes winner in his career, he has a pair of wins to his name so far in 2020 but has been out of the money in his other three starts. Last out he ran last in the (G1) Forego Stakes in a race that featured a lot more early speed than he’ll be facing here, and a wet track he absolutely hated.
His trainer is Kelly Breen, Jose Lezcano gets the call to ride.
2020 Vosburgh Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Stan The Man Race Odds: 8-1
Second to Firenze Fire back in June in the (G2) True North Stakes at Belmont, Stan The Man has shown some improvement in the latter part of the 2020 season. He followed that effort with a confidence-building win in the Tale Of The Cat Stakes at Saratoga over a rival that came back to win his next start.
He’s still looking for his first win at the graded-stakes level in four tries, with two second-place finishes.
John Terranova is the trainer, two-time Vosburgh winner John Velazquez will be in the saddle.
2020 Vosburgh Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Engage Odds: 2-1
Away from the races for almost a year with injury issues, Engage had a very promising end to 2019 that included winning the (G2) Ogden Phoenix Stakes over a very good field at Keeneland in October and then running fourth in the BC Sprint, one spot ahead of Firenze Fire.
For his career he’s been first or second in nine of 13 starts. He’s by the same sire as Authentic, winner of the Kentucky Derby three weeks ago.
His trainer is Steve Asmussen, jockey Jose Ortiz won the race 2017.
2020 Vosburgh Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: True Timber Race Odds: 9-2
The always competitive True Timber has made 11 straight starts at the graded-stakes level and has been second or third in seven of those, but he’s still looking for his first win.
A last-out third in the Forego, he gets a cut back in distance here from the mile that he is most usually entered to run and that could be of some benefit in helping him get into the money again.
Both trainer Jack Sisterson and jockey Kendrick Camouche are looking for their first Vosburgh win.

Talented as he may be, I don’t think Engage stands head-and-shoulders above this field and I’d be very reluctant to take him at 2-1 in his first race in almost 11 months. That said, I think Firenze Fire has the most back class in the race, and I’d be happy to play him for the win at 7-2 or even 3-1.
I really liked Stan The Man’s last effort and think he offers value to use in the exacta.
