2020 Turf Sprint Stakes Handicapping
Perhaps the most unique horse racing venue in North America, Kentucky Downs is a turf-only track that only holds races in a short one-week race meet every September.
Saturday marks the mid-point of the meet and features five stakes races, including the (G3) Turf Sprint. The race is a ‘Win And You’re In’ event for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be held November 7 at Keeneland Race Course.
The Turf Sprint has drawn a tough field with lots of betting value. Open to horses aged three and older, 12 have been entered to race six furlongs.

2020 Turf Sprint Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Totally Boss Race Odds: 9-2
The 2019 winner of the race, Totally Boss gets the nod as the lukewarm favourite in the morning line odds.
A winner of 6-of-18 lifetime, he opened the 2020 season with a dull eighth-place effort in an allowance level race at Churchill, but improved off that effort to run second last out in the (G2) Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland.
It’s worth noting that no horse has won back-to-back runnings of the Turf Sprint since Soaring Free turned the trick back in 2004-05.
He’s trained by George Arnold, Florent Geroux gets the call to ride.
2020 Turf Sprint Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Kanthaka Race Odds: 5-1
Although he’s looking for his first win since 2018, Kanthaka has been on the edges, finishing in the money in four of his last five starts.
That includes a second-place run last out in the (G1) Jaipur Stakes, where he was beaten just a neck by the tough mare Oleksandra.
He’s trained by Graham Motion, Jose Ortiz will be in the saddle.
2020 Turf Sprint Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Bound For Nowhere Odds: 5-1
Ultra-consistent Bound For Nowhere was third, beaten by just a half-length when trying to take them wire-to-wire last out in the Shakertown, a race he won back in 2018. Prior to that he was second by just a head in the (G3) San Simeon at Santa Anita as the favourite.
He has a win over the Kentucky Downs turf, having run first in the Tourist Mile Stakes at one-mile back in 2018.

2020 Turf Sprint Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Imprimis Race Odds: 8-1
First across the line last out in the (G3) Troy Stakes, Imprimis was DQd in that race for interference and placed third. Previous to that he was sixth, but only four lengths from the winner in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
Fourth in this race last year, he’s won 7-of-14 lifetime.

As reflected in the morning line odds this is a wide-open race and a case could be made for at least five or six to come out on top.
Despite the close loss, I think Kanthaka’s last out result was significant in a race that finished less than a 10th of a second off the track record, and I’ll play him for the win.
Having watched the Troy Stakes, I didn’t really agree with the DQ of Imprimis and I think he’s poised for another big effort on Saturday and I’ll box him with Kanthaka in the exacta.
