2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Handicapping

Graded-stakes turf racing is the feature event on Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream with the running of the (G3) Tropical Turf Stakes going as race 10 on the 11-race card. Open to horses age four and older, the Tropical Turf is run at a flat mile on the grass. 

The race has drawn a solid betting field of eight entries after the scratch of morning line favourite Analyze It, and with that one out the betting odds are likely to be quite spread out.

2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Admissions Office Odds: 7-2

A last out winner racing a marathon 1 1/2 miles in the (G3) Louisville Stakes at Churchill Downs, Admissions Office was sorely in need of that confidence-building score as he had been without a win in eight previous starts.

That was also his first graded-stakes win in eight tries. Although he does have a pair of runner-up efforts, he is also winless in four starts at Gulfstream.

He’s a Brian Lynch trainee, Julien Leparoux is the jock.

2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ride A Comet Race Odds: 5-1

At first glance you see that Ride A Comet is coming in on a three-race winning streak, but a closer look reveals the first of those came way back in 2018 when he took the (G2) Del Mar Derby.

After missing all of 2019 with injury, he came back to the races north of the border at Woodbine where he has a pair of 2020 wins on the all-weather track. The last of those came in the (G2) Kennedy Road Stakes, where he bested Woodbine star Pink Lloyd, a winner of more than $1.5 million lifetime.

He’s trained by Mark Casse, while Tyler Gaffalone gets the riding assignment.

2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tusk Race Odds: 15-1

Well-bred eight-year-old Tusk only made two starts in 2020, the first in January and the second in December.

That January start was in this very race, where he stuck close to a very fast early pace and then came home flying to clear the field by two lengths. Last race he tried stretching out to 1 1/16 miles and was the pace setter before tiring late in his first start in 10 months.

He’s trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. with Luis Saez getting the call to ride. 

2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hay Dakota Race Odds: 15-1

Another eight-year-old and a veteran of 44 lifetime starts, Hay Dakota doesn’t have the back class and win numbers of some of the other in here. However, he gets consideration on the strength of having set the Gulfstream track record for 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf back in late January of last year.

He’s won 10 of his 44 races, and has been in the money 24 times total.

Michael Maker is the trainer, Gulfstream regular Paco Lopez will be in the irons.

Here’s My 2020 Tropical Turf Stakes Free Pick.

This race shapes up to show lots of early speed, with Hay Dakota and perhaps one or two others gunning it right out of the gate. That means for favourite Admissions Office two things could happen – he could get up for the win if the pace duel falters late, or the race could be over before he makes his best run. 

I’m going to bet on the latter, and take Ride A Comet for the win. I think he’s best suited to track off the pace and get the first jump when they turn for home, and he could be sitting on a big effort in his third start in three months.
