2020 Sycamore Stakes Handicapping
Weekday graded-stakes racing at Keeneland is highlighted by the running of the (G3) Sycamore Stakes. A tough 1 1/2 mile marathon on the Keeneland turf course, the Sycamore is open to horses aged three and older.
For 2020 the race has drawn a mixed field of 10 mostly veteran runners.
Odds listed here are provided by the Keeneland track handicapper.
2020 Sycamore Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Aquaphobia Race Odds: 5-2
Consistent seven-year-old Aquaphobia spent most of his earlier career racing in the allowance ranks, but has stepped up as he has gotten older and now has made four of his last five starts in graded stakes.
He has been taking on some pretty solid competition in those starts, and two races back managed to capture the (G1) United Nations Stakes by one length going 1 3/8 miles. Last out he could only manage a well-beaten third in the (G1) Sword Dancer Stakes, but faces a much easier field here.
He’s trained by Michael Maker, who won the race last year, and Florent Geroux is tapped to ride.
2020 Sycamore Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ziyad Race Odds: 5-2
The UK-bred Ziyad makes his second start in North America, having run third last year in the (G1) Canadian International at Woodbine.
Outside of that he has done all his racing in France, where he has six in-the-money finishes at the highest stakes levels, including a win and a runner-up finish in Group 1 races last summer.
Stateside three-time race winner Graham Motion is trainer of record, while jockey Manny Franco will be in the irons.
2020 Sycamore Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Red Knight Race Odds: 3-1
New York-bred Red Knight comes into the race looking for his first graded-stakes win in his seventh try, although he has been in the money in three of those, and he is a horse that posts consistent triple-digit speed figures.
Last out he was second in the Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes going 1 1/2 miles at Kentucky Downs, beaten just over a length by the very good Arklow.
The trainer is Bill Mott, jockey James Graham has two previous race wins to his name.
2020 Sycamore Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Postulation Race Odds: 15-1
Third is this race last year, the eight-year-old Postulation will also be making just his third start of 2020 and could very well move forward off a fifth-place run in the Kentucky Turf Cup.
He opened his 2020 campaign in July by running a very good second in the (G2) Elkhorn Stakes at the same track and distance he’ll be trying again on Thursday.
He’s trained by Michael Matz, jockey Julien Leparoux tries for his second Sycamore win.
Here’s My 2020 Sycamore Stakes Free Pick.
It’s hard to look past the top three contenders here, and even at that based on past performance I think there’s some class separation between the top two and Red Knight.
It’s never a bad thing to get 5-2 on a favorite and hopefully they’ll stay somewhere right around that at post time. The drop in class here should prove significant for Aquaphobia and I’ll play him for the win and box the exacta with Ziyad.
