2020 Southwest Stakes Handicapping
A Monday holiday in the US brings a handful of big-money stakes races to Oaklawn Park including the (G3) Southwest Stakes. With $750,000 in total purse money up for grabs, the race has drawn a solid field of nine three-year-olds to race 1 1/16 miles on the Oaklawn dirt track. Seven of the nine entries are in single digits in the morning line odds.
The race is also a qualifier for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, wth points being awarded on a 10-4-2-1 scale to the top four finishers.
Odds listed here are morning line odds from the Oaklawn Park track handicapper.
2020 Southwest Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Answer In Race Odds: 3-1
Making his first start of 2020, Answer In comes into the race after putting up a huge 108 Equibase speed figure in a runner-up effort last out in the Springboard Mile. Prior to that he scored his maiden win in his second career start after running second in his racing debut. The concern is that Answer In had every chance to actually win the Springboard, but hung late and now has to go a sixteenth of a mile further.
The trainer is Brad Cox, with Javier Castellano getting the mount.
2020 Southwest Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Gold Street Race Odds: 6-1
A speedy front-running colt, Gold Street comes in off a win in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park just over three weeks ago, for his third win in a row after scoring his maiden victory prior to that in his fourth lifetime start. Coupled with a pair of close runner-up finishes, he’s been first or second in five of his six career races. There’s some concern as to how he will handle the added distance as both his parents were sprinters, although his grandsire was 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, so there is some distance ability in his pedigree.
Steve Asmussen is the trainer, Martin Garcia once again gets the call to ride.
2020 Southwest Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Chase Tracker Race Odds: 7-2
After winning his career debut, Chase Tracker moved right into graded-stakes racing and finished third in both the (G3) Nashua and (G3) Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct. In the Remsen he was beaten by Shotski, who has since run second in the (G3) Withers Stakes, and Ajaaweed, who last week was third in the (G3) Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The Remsen was run at 1 1/8 miles, so he actually gets a cut back in distance here.
Todd Pletcher is the trainer, John Velazquez is the jockey.
2020 Southwest Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Silver Prospector Race Odds: 9-2
After starting his career with mixed results racing on the turf, Silver Prospector was switched to dirt and promptly scored his maiden win. Since then he’s finished in the money in two of his last three starts, including a win in the (G2) Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs. He was only fourth last out in the one-mile Smarty Jones, but the added distance here should help.
Another Steve Asmussen trainee, Ricardo Santana Jr. gets the call to ride.
Here’s my 2020 Southwest Stakes Free Pick.
I had picked Gold Street to win the Smarty Jones, and despite some concern about the added distance he’ll face on Monday, I’m gong to stay on him for now and bet him for the win and place – especially if I can get his 6-1 ML odds. As mentioned earlier there’s also distance questions with Answer In, but he appears talented enough to at least be in the picture as they come to wire, so I’ll put him underneath in an exacta, along with the late-running Silver Prospector.
