2020 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes Handicapping
Friday evening stakes racing is on tap this week at Oklahoma’s Remington Park, as the track plays host to the Remington Springboard Mile.
The race is significant as a qualifying race for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, with the top four finishers earning Derby points on a 10-4-2-1 scale.
Open to horses age two, the race is run at a flat mile on the Remington dirt course. Friday’s race has drawn a full field of 11 and offers lots of betting value.

2020 Springboard Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Outadore Odds: 3-1
Set to make his dirt racing debut, the Kentucky bred Outadore has so far in his short career been very successful on the turf with two wins and a third-place showing in three starts.
His last race came in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf where he set the pace at odds of 9-1 and led into the stretch before being passed late. Prior to that he broke his maiden first asking at Saratoga and then captured the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint.
He’s trained by Wesley Ward while jockey David Cabrera is tapped to ride.
2020 Springboard Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cowan Race Odds: 4-1
Although he did get his first-out maiden win on the dirt at Churchill, Cowan is another that has been making his mark lately on the grass, including a second-place run last out in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
He also ran second two back in the Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland, and was third, five lengths back of Outadore in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Sprint.
He’s one of two in the race for trainer Steve Asmussen, who has won the race six times, including back-to-back in 2018-19. Stewart Elliot will be the jock.
2020 Springboard Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Number One Dude Race Odds: 6-1
The only Oklahoma-bred in the race, Number One Dude also gets horse-for-the-course status, as he has made all three lifetime starts at Remington Park and has won all three races.
His last two wins were at the lower stakes level in races that were restricted to Oklahoma breds. He was particularly good last out when stalking the pace early before going on to win by more than six lengths.
He takes a big step up here going against open company and graded-stakes placed horses.
The trainer is Kari Craddock, while Ezequiel Lara will be in the saddle.
2020 Springboard Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Red N Wild Race Odds: 12-1
One of the more experienced runners in the field with five lifetime starts, Red N Wild has a pair of wins and a second and third-place finish in that span.
Sired by 2015 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern, he also has a win at the track and distance as last out he came from off the pace to grab a win at the allowance level racing one mile on the Remington dirt. Prior to that he was beaten just a head in the Clever Trevor Stakes.
He’s trained by Terry Eoff with Sophie Doyle getting the rider assignment.

On back class and speed figures both Outadore and Cowan stand out in this field, and all things being equal it should come down to a battle between those two.
However, there are questions as how those two will handle the switch to dirt, as well as the distance. Pace also should play a role here, as there is lots of early speed and we could see at least two or three of these duelling on the front end, setting things up for someone else to come from off the pace in late stretch.
That being the case I’m gong to try to get some value and play Red N Wild to get a good stalking trip, overtake the leaders late and hit the wire first. I’ll put him in the exacta box with Outadore.
