2020 Queen’s Plate Handicapping
The oldest annual sporting event held in North America, the 161st running of the Queen’s Plate is set to go Saturday at Woodbine.
The first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Plate is usually held in late July, but just like the Kentucky Derby the race was pushed back on the calendar due to the ongoing situation with Covid-19.
Open to Canadian-foaled three-year-old horses, the Queen’s Plate is run at 1 1/4 miles on Woodbine’s all-weather tapeta surface. The race has drawn a full field of 14.
Odds listed here are provided by the Woodbine handicapper.
2020 Queen’s Plate Free Pick & Handicapping: Clayton Race Odds: 2-1
With record of three wins and a runner-up finish to his name, Clayton comes into the race off a win in the Plate Trial Stakes, the final prep for the big race.
In that one he tracked a relatively slow pace through the first mile before taking over in the stretch drive to prevail by a 1/2 length going 1 1/8 miles.
Just like the Derby, part of the trick in handicapping the Plate is deciding which horse will handle going 1 1/4 miles for the first time. Sire Bodemeister ran second in the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, so the distance pedigree is there.
Trainer Kevin Attard goes for his first Plate title, while jockey Rafael Hernandez won the race in 2015.
2020 Queen’s Plate Free Pick & Handicapping: Curlin’s Voyage Race Odds: 5-2
A filly by 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin, Curlin’s Voyage punched her ticket to the Plate starting gate with a win in the Woodbine Oaks, where she rode a ground-saving rail trip coming from off the pace.
The winner of the Sovereign Award as Canada’s top two-year-old filly, she’s won four of her last six starts. Although this will be her first try against males, fillies have done well in the Plate in recent history, winning four of the last nine, including Holy Helena in 2017 and Wonder Gadot in 2018.
Trainer Josie Carroll has two previous Plate wins in her resume, while jockey Patrick Husbands tries for his third.
2020 Queen’s Plate Free Pick & Handicapping: Halo Again Odds: 5-1
The runner-up in the Plate Trial, Halo Again did a lot of the dirty work in that one in pressing the pace throughout and then still had enough to give Clayton all he could handle right to the wire.
A winner of 3-of-6 lifetime, he’s only been out of the money twice, when he shipped south earlier this year to tackle Kentucky Derby contenders in the (G3) Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds and the (G3) Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.
Steve Asmussen goes for his first Plate win as trainer, jockey Luis Contreras has won twice before.
2020 Queen’s Plate Free Pick & Handicapping: Olliemyboy Race Odds: 30-1
Lightly raced Olliemyboy has been off to a slow start in his past two, including last out when he came from dead last to make a strong move on the turn and get up for his maiden win going 1 1/8 miles.
Sire Union Rags won the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes in 2012, while grandsire Thunder Gulch won the Belmont as well as the 1 1/4 miles Derby and Travers Stakes, so pedigree suggest he should relish the extra distance here.
Veteran trainer Sid Attard is looking for his first Queen’s Plate win, while jockey Steven Bahen scored an upset win way back in 2002 with 82-1 long shot TJ’s Lucky Moon.
Here’s my 2020 Queen’s Plate Free Pick.
There was little to separate Clayton and Halo Again in the Plate Trial, and I expect those two will battle it out again for top honours. At anything like his morning line odds or higher, I’ll play Clayton for the win and box those two in the exacta. Looking for some value, I’ll bet a second exacta with both of those on top of Olliemyboy.
There’s no doubt Curlin’s Voyage is talented, but she may not get the perfect trip like she had in the Oaks. Nonetheless, she’s worth using on the bottom of trifectas.
