2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Handicapping
The feature race of the day on Saturday at Keeneland is the (G1) Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes for three year old fillies. They’ll be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Keeneland turf course.
The race has drawn a good betting field of nine, and you can expect the winner and perhaps one or two more will move on from here to try the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on November 7.
Odds listed here are provided by the Keeneland track handicapper.
2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Free Pick & Handicapping: Magic Attitude Race Odds: 5-2
The UK-bred filly Magic Attitude started her career racing in France where she had some good success at the top levels, including a Group 3 win and a Group 2 runner-up finish.
She shipped stateside this summer and promptly became a Grade 1 winner on this side of the pond when she took the Belmont Oaks Invitational at 1 1/4 miles by 2 3/4 lengths over a filly she’ll meet again here.
Her trainer is Arnaud Delacour, jockey Javier Castellano gets the riding assignment and looks for his third win.
2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Free Pick & Handicapping: Harvey’s Lil Goil Race Odds: 3-1
A daughter of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Harvey’s Lil Goil rarely runs a bad race whether she’s running on dirt or turf, with three wins and five in-the-money finishes in seven lifetime starts.
Three starts back she won the (G3) Regret Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on the Churchill turf, and last out she led into deep stretch only to be caught at the wire going a 1 5/16 miles distance that was probably a bit far for her.
She’s trained by 2014 race winner Bill Mott, while Martin Garcia gets the call to ride.
2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Free Pick & Handicapping: Sweet Melania Race Odds: 7-2
Never out of the money in eight lifetime starts, Sweet Melania closed 2019 with a third-place run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and opened 2020 with a win in the (G3) Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont Park.
Last out she was second by a nose after getting nailed at the wire in the (G3) Lake George Stakes at Saratoga racing one mile. She’ll be trying the nine furlong distance here for the first time in her career.
Both trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Flavien Prat are looking for their first QE II Cup win.
2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Free Pick & Handicapping: Hendy Woods Race Odds: 10-1
Improving filly Hendy Woods took a big step forward two starts back in winning the Indiana Grand Stakes by a neck after coming from way back in the field going one mile.
Last out she had to be checked hard going into the first turn but still managed to get up and finish second by only just over a length to Grade 1 winner Sharing, also going one mile in the (G2) Edgemont Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Mark Casse has one race win to his name, as does jockey Julien Leparoux.
Here’s My 2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Free Pick.
This shapes up to be an excellent race with a very talented group of fillies and a case could be made for several for the win.
Turf racing in France is generally a notch above the quality of the US, something that was on evidence with Magic Attitude’s first-try win at Belmont Park. She’s a serious factor in this race, but I’ve been a fan of Harvey’s Lil Goil all summer long and I’ll stick with her here for the win.
