2020 Phoenix Stakes Handicapping
Named for a Lexington hotel, the (G2) Phoenix Stakes was first run in 1831, making it the oldest stakes race still run in North America, although it hasn’t been run continuously over that time.
For horses age three and older, the Phoenix is a ‘Win And You’re In’ race for the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, to be run over the same Keeneland dirt course at the same six-furlong distance on November 7.
Odds listed here are provided by the Keeneland track handicapper.
2020 Phoenix Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Whitmore Race Odds: 7-2
The wily veteran in the field, Whitmore won this race back in 2017 and finished second in both 2018 and last year.
Last out he was seventh over a sloppy track he did not like in the (G1) Forego Stakes at Saratoga. Prior to that he ran off a streak of four top-two finishes, including wins in the (G3) Count Fleet Sprint Handicap and the Hot Springs Invitational, both at Oaklawn Park.
Trainer Ron Moquette goes for his second win in the race, the jockey is Joe Talamo.
2020 Phoenix Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Echo Town Race Odds: 8-1
After running fifth last out while trying to stretch out to a mile, Echo Town is back to a distance that better suits, where he has won three of five and been in the money in the two others.
He was impressive two starts back in winning the (G1) Allen Jerkins Stakes at Saratoga by more than three lengths, and also has a couple wins in the season in the highest allowance-level ranks
The trainer is Steve Asmussen, Ricardo Santana Jr. is tapped to ride.
2020 Phoenix Stakes Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Absolutely Aiden Race Odds: 12-1
While he’ll be making his graded-stakes debut, Absolutely Aiden has been steadily moving up the ranks with each start and comes in having won three of his last four races.
Last out he took his first crack at lower stakes company and won the Good Lord Stakes at Ellis Park with a career-best speed figure. Prior to that he cruised to a an open-lengths win at Churchill Downs over a runner that came back to win his next start.
His trainer is Wesley Hawley, Chris Landeros gets the riding assignment.
2020 Phoenix Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: No Parole Race Odds: 5-1
A three-year-old Louisiana-bred colt, No Parole faded badly last out in the Allen Jerkins, but looked very good in the race just prior to that, finishing more than three lengths in front of Echo Town to win the (G1) Woody Stephens.
A winner of five of seven lifetime so far in his young racing career, he is also a perfect three-for-three at the six furlong distance.
Trainer Tom Amoss won the race back-to-back in 2012 and 2013, while jockey Luis Saez scored his first Phoenix win in 2018.
Here’s My 2020 Phoenix Stakes Free Pick.
This is a solid lineup for a Grade 2 race, and we haven’t even mentioned morning line favourite Diamond Oops. I can easily give Whitmore an excuse for his last effort in the slop, and even at age 7 he’s formidable in here.
But I expect one of the youngsters is primed to step up, and I’m going to take a bit of a shot with No Parole. I think he ran into a big track bias against front runners last out at Saratoga and I expect him to bounce back when cutting back to six furlongs. I’ll hedge my bets and box him in the exacta with Whitmore.
Long shot – Absolutely Aiden
