2020 Oaklawn Stakes Handicapping
One of the very few US race tracks still in operation, on Saturday Oaklawn Park will host the (spectator-free) Oaklawn Stakes.
While not a Kentucky Derby points qualifying race, the Oaklawn Stakes has drawn a very good field of three-year-old colts and geldings, with several of the entries on the radar for the Derby on the first Saturday in September.
The full field of 13 will be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Oaklawn dirt track.

2020 Oaklawn Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Thousand Words Race Odds: 5-2
A winner of three straight races to start his career, Thousand Words ships in from California where he followed up his first-out maiden win last October with back-to-back graded-stakes victories in the Los Alamitos Futurity and the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.
He then ran into a very tough field in the (G2) San Filipe Stakes where he tired late and ran fourth. While this race may be a slight drop-down in class, he has to prove he can get the job done in his first lifetime start outside of California.
He’s trained by Bob Baffert, Joe Talamo gets the call to ride.
2020 Oaklawn Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Basin Race Odds: 7-2
Looking like a star in the making when he crushed the field by more than six lengths late last summer in the (G1) Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, Basin appeared to take a bit of a step back when running a distant third in the (G2) Rebel at Oaklawn last month.
Off a six-month layoff it could just be that he needed that race to get back into form, but given that his two lifetime wins have come at under one mile, distance is a legitimate concern.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, while Florent Geroux is the rider.
2020 Oaklawn Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Farmington Road Race Odds: 7-1
There should be a lot of early speed in this race, and that sets up well for Farmington Road, whose late-closing style shouldn’t be affected by drawing a far outside post.
He showed steady improvement through his first three races before scoring his maiden win, and then ran well stepping up to graded stakes company for the first time to run fourth in the (G2) Risen Star.
He’s been the victim of some very wide trips, and if he can secure a better position early he should come flying late.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Martin Garcia will be in the irons.
2020 Oaklawn Free Pick & Handicapping: Taishan Race Odds: 9-2
The results haven’t been there in two previous starts in graded-stakes races, but unlike a few others in here Taishan appears to want more distance. Last out he got back in the win column with a solid 4 1/2 length victory in an allowance-level event at Oaklawn where he went wire-to-wire going 1 1/16 miles over a sloppy track.
There’s expected to be a bit of rain on Saturday in Hot Springs, and that could again play to his advantage.
He’s trained by Richard Baltas, Joel Rosario is the jock.

As mentioned earlier, there seems to be a few in here that could show lots of early speed, and that would perfectly suit Thousand Words, who does his best racing when able to settle just off a fast pace. If he’s anywhere close to his pre-race odds he’s worth betting to win.
I’ll also play him on top of the exacta with both Farmington Road and Taishan underneath.
