2020 Oaklawn Handicap Handicapping
Slotted between the two divisions of the (G1) Arkansas Derby on Oaklawn’s Saturday race card, the (G2) Oaklawn Handicap is open to horses age four and up, racing 1 1/8 miles on the Oaklawn dirt track.
The race has drawn a full field of 14 runners, with several familiar names from both the 2018 and 2019 Triple Crown trail, and with no horse at better than 4-1 in pre-race odds it looks to be a very good betting race.
Odds listed here are from Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Oaklawn Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Tacitus Race Odds: 4-1
Third in the 2019 Kentucky Derby and second in the 2019 Belmont Stakes, Tacitus has spent most of the last year knocking heads with the very best horses in North America.
Although his last win came a year ago in the (G1) Wood Memorial, he’s been second or third in five of his last six starts, with four of those races at the Grade 1 level.
He’s trained by Bill Mott, while John Valazquez will be in the irons.
2020 Oaklawn Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Improbable Odds: 4-1
Another one from the 2019 Triple Crown trail, Improbable was fourth in last year’s Derby and sixth in the Preakness Stakes. Last start he ran second in the Oaklawn Mile, just 3/4 lengths back of the even-money favorite.
Distance is a legitimate concern as his best races have been at one mile. It’s notable that the Oaklawn Park handicapper has him no better than the fifth choice in the race at 8-1 in the morning line odds.
Bob Baffert is the trainer, Martin Garcia will ride.
2020 Oaklawn Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: By My Standards Race Odds: 5-1
Two-for-two so far this season and four-for-eight in his career, By My Standards comes into this race off a win in the (G2) New Orleans Classic at Fair Grounds, where he stalked the leader out of the gate before going on to win by three lengths.
Although never worse than third in seven of his eight lifetime races, he lacks a bit of speed compared to others in here.
Trained by the red-hot Bret Calhoun, he’ll be ridden by Gabriel Saez.
2020 Oaklawn Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Combatant Race Odds: 11-2
A five-year-old veteran with 24 starts to his name, Combatant spent most of last year racing in the allowance ranks, but made a return to graded stakes in early 2020 and ran third in the (G2) San Pasqual Stakes before stepping up to win the (G1) Santa Anita Handicap by a neck.
Like Improbable there is a question as to whether he can get the 1 1/8 mile distance.
John Sadler is the trainer, Joel Rosario is tapped to ride.
Here’s my 2020 Oaklawn Handicap Free Pick.
Although you would like to see a few more numbers in the win column for his career, I think Tacitus has been competitive against some very good horses and is the class of the field. I have no problem tossing his last effort in the Saudi Cup and betting him to win on Saturday.
I’ll be ecstatic if I can get anything near his 4-1 pre-race odds.
I’ll also put him on top of the exacta with By My Standards in the place spot.
