2020 Franklin County Stakes Handicapping
This weekend’s racing at Keenelend kicks off Friday with graded-stakes action on the turf with the running of the (G3) Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes.
A fast 5 1/2 furlong sprint on the grass, the Franklin County is open to fillies and mares age three and older, and has drawn a full field of 12 expected starters.

2020 Franklin County Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Got Stormy Race Odds: 6-5
Multiple graded-stakes winning mare Got Stormy has had some trouble finding the winner’s circle in 2020, but does come into this off a win in the (G3) Kentucky Downs Lady Sprint Stakes back in mid-September.
Prior to that she was second in the (G1) Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga going up against males, in a race she won in 2019. For her career she has nine wins and 14 in-the-money finishes in 24 lifetime starts.
She’s trained by Mark Casse, regular rider Tyler Gaffalione stays with the mount.
2020 Franklin County Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Into Mystic Race Odds: 6-1
Third, beaten 4 1/2 lengths by Got Stormy in the Kentucky Downs Sprint, Into Mystic has been fairly consistent in 2020 while primarily racing in the lower levels.
She does have an ungraded stakes win to her name this season and another at the allowance level to go with a fourth-place run in the (G2) Monrovia Stakes at Santa Anita. She has also popped off four consecutive 100-plus Equibase speed figures in her last four races.
She’s trained by Brenden Walsh, while the jockey is Joe Talamo.
2020 Franklin County Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Winning Envelope Race Odds: 10-1
Second behind Got Stormy in the Kentucky Downs race, Winning Envelope has been just missing in her most recent efforts, as that was her third consecutive runner-up finish.
She opened 2020 with an open-lengths win in the Jersey Lilly Turf Stakes at Sam Houston Park, but then failed to hit the board in her next two. She does have a win going one mile on the Keeneland turf from last season.
The trainer is Chris Block, Julien Leparoux will be in the saddle.
2020 Franklin County Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ambassador Luna Race Odds: 12-1
Florida-bred Ambassador Luna will be making her graded-stakes debut in her 13th lifetime start, and comes in off a win in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill Downs, which was run on the dirt.
A winner of 4-of-12 lifetime, she’ll also be making her first start at Keeneland.
She’s a James Gulick trainee, Florent Geroux will be in the irons.

Based on back class, Got Stormy stands head-and-shoulders above this field, and I’ll pick her for the win.
There’s a bit of a concern in that she’s not a front-running mare, and the 5 1/2 furlong distance here is the shortest she’s run in her career. There’s not a ton of early speed in this race, so she may have to get out of her comfort zone a press the pace a bit, or the race could be over before she gets running.
As reflected in the odds, there should be some good value in finding the right exacta combo, and I’ll play her on top of both Winning Envelope and Ambassador Luna.
