2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Handicapping
The benefit of being one of the very few race tracks still in operation in North America and offering big-money stakes races is that you are going to draw some high-calibre horses to your races. This is the position Oaklawn Park is in with two graded-stakes events on Saturday featuring very good fields.
While it makes for a tougher handicapping task, horse bettors love to see large, competitive fields with the potential for bigger payouts.
First up on Saturday is the (G3) Count Fleet Sprint Handicap, with 11 runners going six furlongs on the Oaklawn dirt track.
Odds listed here are from Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Whitmore Race Odds: 37-20
Although he’s now seven years old and a veteran of 33 starts – with 13 wins – Whitmore has shown he still has something in the tank with a win and a runner-up finish already in 2020, with both races on the Oaklawn dirt. Having said that, you do have to go back to August of 2018 to find his last win at the graded-stakes level, with a handful of top-three finishes in that span.
He won this race in 2018 and was second last year.
Ron Moquett is the trainer, Joe Talamo is the jockey.
2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Hidden Scroll Odds: 2-1
There’s no doubt Hidden Scroll is loaded with speed, and that makes him a contender here. But you have to wonder if the Bovada oddsmaker was seduced by the fact he won his last race by more than 12 lengths, while ignoring the poor quality of the field he was facing.
None of the horses he went up against in that allowance-level race have come close to winning at the stakes level, and in two tries in graded stakes last spring he could do no better than fourth. He’s facing a big step up in class here.
He’s trained by Bill Mott, while Martin Garcia gets the call to ride.
2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Flagstaff Race Odds: 5-1
It took Flagstaff eight races to graduate to stakes racing, but he’s been solid in his last four runs at the higher level with two wins and two other top-three finishes in his last four. Last out he won the (G2) San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita after running second in the (G2) Palos Verdes, also at San A.
It should be said that he was taking on very small fields in both those events, and so like Hidden Scroll he’s faced with stepping up to take on a bit tougher task here.
John Sadler trains, Joel Rosario gets the call to ride.
2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Share The Upside Race Odds: 20-1
This will be Share The Upside’s first foray into graded-stakes racing, and his recent form has been erratic at best. But it is notable that two starts back he went wire-to-wire at Oaklawn to beat Whitmore in the King Cotton Stakes, and just a year ago he popped off a 120 Equibase speed rating in a six-furlong allowance-level event at Oaklawn, tops in this field.
He’s four-for-six with one other runner-up finish at Oaklawn, and could be the horse for the course.
The trainer is Steve Asmussen, while Florent Geroux will be in the saddle.
Here’s my 2020 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap Free Pick.
While I’ve long been a fan of Whitmore, I don’t think he’s quite the horse he used to be and at less than 2-1 odds I’m going to pick against him here. I think Flagstaff should be able to work out a good trip from the #2 gate sitting off what should be a very fast pace up front and I’ll bet him for the win.
I won’t toss Whitmore altogether, but use him underneath in the exacta, and swing for the fences a bit with Share The Upside in the place spot on the exacta as well.
