2020 Buena Vista Stakes Handicapping

Without any 2020 Kentucky Derby qualifying races on the slate this weekend, the biggest race in North America on Saturday is the (G2) Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita. Open to fillies and mares aged four and older, the Buena Vista is run at a flat mile on the Santa Anita turf course.

The race has drawn an international field of 12 entries, and they’ll be chasing a total purse of $200,000.

2020 Buena Vista Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Jolie Olimpica Race Odds: 11-10

The solid favorite in the pre-race odds, Jolie Olimpica won three straight races in her native Brazil to start her career, including an impressive one-mile Grade 1 win over males in the Grande Premio Jockey Club Brasileiro last June. She was then sold and brought to the US, where she scored a win one month ago in her North American debut, taking the (G3) Las Ciengas Stakes. That race was a 5 1/2 furlong sprint, now she stretches out again to her preferred distance.

Richard Mandella is the trainer, Hall of Famer Mike Smith is tapped to ride. 

2020 Buena Vista Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Carressa Race Odds: 4-1

Several of the runners in this race are exiting the (G3) Megahertz Stakes including the winner, Carressa, who was making her first start on turf after five races – and two wins – on the dirt. It was also her stakes racing debut, and earned her a second consecutive plus-100 Equibase speed rating. She’s a steadily improving filly who is now going to face a step up in class.

She’s trained by John Sherriffs, Victor Espinoza is the jockey. 

 

2020 Buena Vista Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Lady Prancelot Race Odds: 5-1

Already with a fairly remarkable 17 starts over two seasons, Lady Prancelot is an Irish-bred filly that has been racing primarily in southern California since mid-2018, where she has racked up nine top-three finishes in 12 starts. She comes in off a two-race winning streak, including last out in the (G1) American Oaks at Santa Anita. Something of a late-runner, she’ll need a solid pace up front early and may need to be a bit closer to the front than usual as she faces a cut back in distance here from her last two starts.

2020 Buena Vista Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mucho Unusual Race Odds: 8-1

California-bred Mucho Unusual has four wins and eight in-the money finishes in her 11 career starts but has been kept out of the winner’s circle in her last four starts. She has been doing all her running in graded-stakes races since winning the (G2) San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar last July. Most recently she was just caught at the wire by Lady Prancealot in the American Oaks, although unlike that one she has shown some ability to race closer to the pace and that might help turn the tables at the shorter distance here.

She trained by Tim Yankteen, with Joel Rosario in the saddle.

Although the level of competition in Brazil is a cut below North America, Jolie Olimpico proved she was the real deal in the Las Cienagas and I think she’ll win this. I’ll key her on top of my exotic tickets, with Mucho Unusual in the exacta, and then on top of a trifecta ticket with all the others mentioned here as well as Super Patriot in the place and show spots.
