2020 Breeders’ Stakes Handicapping
The final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown is set to go on Saturday from Woodbine, with Mighty Heart looking to become the first horse in 17 years to claim all three races and the TC title.
Similar to the US Triple Crown in that all three races are run at different distances, the Canadian version is unique in that all three are run on different surfaces. The 1 1/4 miles Queen’s Plate was on the all-weather Tapeta track at Woodbine, the 1 3/16 miles Prince Of Wales Stakes went on the dirt at Fort Erie Race Track, and now the tough 1 1/2 miles Breeders’ Stakes is back at Woodbine on the turf.
The race has drawn a full field of 12 Canadian-bred three-year-old colts and geldings.
Odds listed here are provided by the Woodbine track handicapper.
2020 Breeders’ Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mighty Heart Race Odds: 1-1
He blew away the field by more than seven lengths in the Plate and then battled in the stretch to get the Prince of Wales victory by 2 1/2, but now Mighty Heart faces a new challenge of trying to win on the turf.
There is the pedigree for it, as his sire was a Grade 2 winner at 1 1/2 miles on the turf, and distance shouldn’t be an issue as his grandsire on his dam’s side won the Belmont Stakes at 1 1/2 miles as well.
He does have a turf race try at Fair Grounds last March, but he completely blew the first turn in that start and never had a chance after that, finishing 11th.
Trainer Josie Carroll won the the Breeders’ Stakes in 2014, jockey Diasuke Fukumoto goes for his first.
2020 Breeders’ Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Belichick Race Odds: 7-2
The lightly raced Belichick has been in the money in all three lifetime starts so far but is still looking for his first win after two consecutive runner-up finishes, including last out in the Queen’s Plate.
After overcoming a slow start and some traffic trouble, he closed like a freight train in the stretch, going from eighth to second, although he was no where near to catching the winner. He did make his career debut on the Woodbine turf, rallying late for third going seven furlongs.
He comes in fresh after skipping the Prince of Wales.
Another Josie Carroll trainee, she teamed with jockey Luis Contreras for the 2014 win, and he also won in 2011.
2020 Breeders’ Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: English Conquerer Race Odds: 12-1
Unique in the field in that all four of his starts have been on the Woodbine turf, English Conquerer comes in off a win going 1 1/16 miles, while also scoring a career-best Equibase speed rating.
Sire English Channel was a multiple Grade 1 race winner on the turf, including capturing the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Turf at 1 1/2 miles, while his dam was also a stakes winner at one mile on the turf.
Trainer Darwin Banach and jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson both try for their first Breeders’ Stakes win.
2020 Breeders’ Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Told It All Race Odds: 12-1
A winner of three-of-five on the season, Told It All has a pair of wins on the turf to his name, although his most recent victory came while sprinting on the all-weather track.
Last out he could only manage to get up for fifth racing one mile on the turf, but even with that finish he improved his speed rating for the fourth race in a row.
He’s trained by Norm McKnight, jockey Kazushi Kamura is tapped to ride.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Stakes Free Pick.
All of Canadian racing will be cheering on Mighty Heart to close out the Triple Crown, and it would make a great story – I haven’t mentioned that he’s actually missing one eye, and the jockey/trainer combination of Fukumoto and Carroll have never lost in the four previous times they’ve teamed up.
But there’s clearly no value in an even-money favourite that is unproven on the grass. So I’m going to play English Conquerer for the upset win at what should be lucrative odds. The surface isn’t an issue, his pedigree screams out for the distance, and jockey Wilson has been red-hot in stakes races on the Woodbine turf all season long.
