2020 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping
The fastest race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Turf Sprint is run at a sharp 5 1/2 furlongs on the Keeneland turf course. It’s race #2 on Day 2 of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup.
Typically including a mix of both male and female runners, the 2019 Turf Sprint was won by the mare Belvoir Bay, who went to the front right out of the gate and never looked back, hitting the wire first at odds of 14-1.

2020 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Got Stormy Race Odds: 4-1
Second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2019, five-year-old mare Got Stormy has cut back to sprinting this year and comes into the Breeders’ Cup on a two-race win streak.
Two starts back going 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs she came from mid-pack to win the (G3) Ladies Sprint Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths. Last out on the Keeneland turf going 5 1/2 she showed an explosive kick down the lane to get the win by a nose in the (G3) Franklin County Stakes.
Trainer Mark Casse has five BC wins but is looking for his first in the Turf Sprint. Regular rider Tyler Gaffalione gets the call once again.
2020 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Leinster Race Odds: 17-4
Not only does Leinster come into the race with two consecutive wins at the track and distance, he also holds the Keeneland track record for 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. He set that mark two starts back in winning the (G2) Shakertown Stakes by a head in mid-July.
Last out he came right back to win the (G2) Woodford Stakes by a half length, ahead of two that he’ll be facing here again. That race gave him his third win in four starts at Keeneland.
Rusty Arnold trains, Luis Saez will be in the saddle.
2020 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Imprimis Race Odds: 9-2
Florida-bred Imprimis crossed the line first two starts ago in the (G3) Troy Stakes at Saratoga, but was DQ’d for interference in the stretch and placed third.
He got his revenge next out when he won the (G3) Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs over six furlongs, in a race where he was shuffled back in traffic, found a hole and then surged to the front deep into the stretch.
Trainer Joe Orsano is trying for his first BC win since way back in 2000, when he won twice. Irad Ortiz Jr. is the jockey and has been third twice and second once in the race.
2020 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Big Runneur Race Odds: 16-1
Although he lacks the big wins of some of the others in here, you can’t overlook the fact Big Runneur is three-for-three sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf this year. All of those have come in races at Santa Anita, where last out he captured the (G2) Eddie D Stakes by a length over a very good field.
He drew the inside post here and has lots of early speed, so expect him to go to the front and hang on as far as he can.

Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick.
This is one of the toughest handicapping races on Breeders’ Cup Saturday and could produce some big payouts. For one, there could be six or seven runners still in contention by mid-stretch. For two, consider that Into Mystic was only beaten a nose by Got Stormy and is 25-1 in the Bovada odds and Extravagant Kid was only a half-length back of Leinster last out and is at 16-1.
That being said, I like Leinster for the win here. He drew an excellent post to get a good spot just off the early pace and should be ready to pounce as they turn for home, and I can’t ignore his success on the track and at the distance.
