2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Handicapping
A six-furlong dash on the dirt, the BC Sprint is for horses aged three and older. The late scratch just a couple days ago of the favourite Vekoma makes the 2020 edition of the Sprint a fairly wide-open race.
Last year heavy favorite Mitole settled off the pace in the early going and took over in the stretch to win going away at odds of 9-5.

2020 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Yaupon Race Odds: 2-1
A three-year-old that only came to the races this season, Yaupon has yet to lose a race, winning four starts in a row.
After scoring his maiden win at Churchill Downs he ran twice at Saratoga in the summer, getting wire-to-wire wins at the allowance level and then in taking the (G2) Amsterdam Stakes over a tough runner-up. Last out he captured the (G3) Chick Lang Stakes at Pimlico by an easy four lengths.
Trainer Steve Asmussen won the Sprint in 2019, jockey Joel Rosario won it in 2009.
2020 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: CZ Rocket Race Odds: 3-1
Florida-bred CZ Rocket was opened the season racing way down in the claiming ranks where he started a roll that has now grown to five consecutive wins.
The last two of those were in Grade 2 races in California, where he won the Pat O’Brien Stakes by a half-length, and the Santa Anita Sprint Championships by a head. Both of those were against small fields of questionable quality and he faces much tougher here.
Trainer Peter Miller won back-to-back Sprints in 2017-18 with the same horse. Luis Saez is tapped to ride.
2020 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Diamond Oops Race Odds: 11-2
More of a distance runner earlier in his career, Diamond Oops had recently been cut back to a sprinter and has found some success, coming into this race having won two in a row.
Last out going six furlongs on the Keeneland dirt he just got up late to win the (G2) Phoenix Stakes over three others he’ll be facing again here. Prior to that he came from way back sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf to win the (G2) Twin Spires Sprint at Churchill.
Patrick Biancone tries for his first training win at the Breeders’ Cup. Rider Florent Geroux won the race in 2014.
2020 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Frank’s Rockette Race Odds: 10-1
Never worse than second in 10 lifetime starts, Frank’s Rockette has won her last four races, and five-of-six on the year so far.
Back in July she tied the 10-year-old track record at Belmont Park for 6 1/2 furlongs in winning the (G3) Victory Ride Stakes. Next out she moved forward off that race to win the (G2) Prioress at Saratoga. Last out she had an easy time of it in winning the (G2) Gallant Bloom Handicap by more than seven lengths.
She’s trained by Bill Mott, who looks for his first BC Sprint win to go with 10 other BC wins he already has. Jockey Junior Alvarado will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick.
Vekoma has been one of my favourite horses racing this year, and was likely going to be my best bet of the day in the Sprint. With his scratch it throws all my plans, and this race, into a bit of disarray.
This probably isn’t the strongest Sprint field from over the years and so I’m going to take a price and bet Frank’s Rockette for the win. I’m bucking a trend in that not only is she a filly going against older males, and a three-year-old hasn’t won this race in more than 30 years. But given the way 2020 has gone, nothing would surprise.
