2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicapping
For many racing fans, a flat mile on the grass is the best kind of horse racing. For handicappers, the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile on the turf at Keeneland might be the best race of the weekend, with no strong favorite and lots of betting value.
In 2019, 7-2 UK-bred Uni came from the middle of the pack with a strong late run to win the Mile, paying $9.20 on $2 win ticket.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Kameko Race Odds: 9-2
Kentucky bred colt Kameko has spent his entire nine-race career in the UK, where he opened 2020 by winning the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
He then ran in three more consecutive Group 1 events and finished fourth in all three. Last out he dropped to Group 2 company and came away a half-length winner in the Shadwell Joel Stakes, again at Newmarket.
Trainer Andrew Balding goes for his first Breeders’ Cup win, the jockey is Oisin Murphy.
2020 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Uni Race Odds: 6-1
The defending race champ, Uni comes back to try again in a race that has seen four others win back-to-back titles over the years.
A UK-bred mare who started her career racing in France, Uni has been on this side of the pond since 2017 and has raced 15 times in the US, winning nine.
She set the track record for a mile on the grass at Keeneland last year when winning the (G1) First Lady Stakes just prior to winning the BC Mile. She’ll try the exact same path again, last out defending her title in the First Lady over a small-but-solid field one month ago.
Trainer Chad Brown has 15 Breeders’ Cup wins, last year was his first Mile victory. Jockey Joel Rosario was aboard for last year’s win and has three victories in the Mile in total.
2020 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Ivar Race Odds: 7-1
Brazilian-bred colt Ivar was a Grade 1 winner on his home soil before shipping north to race for 2020.
His first out result was so-so, but he’s shown steady improvement since, upping his speed rating every time out, and showing versatility to race on the lead or come from farther back.
Last out he gained a win on the track and at the distance in the (G1) Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes, rallying from off the pace and blowing past the field in the lane to win by a length.
Trainer Paulo Lobo makes just his second start at the Breeders’ Cup, having trained the runner-up in the Distaff 18 years ago. Jockey Joe Talamo looks for his second BC win.
2020 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Factor This Race Odds: 12-1
Front-running five-year-old Factor This has been steadily improving with age, and comes into the race having won five of his last six races, running second in the other.
That loss came when he was run down late going 1 1/8 miles in the Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs. Last out he captured the (G2) Dinner Party Stakes at Pimlico by 2 3/4 lengths and scoring a 118 Equibase speed figure in the process, his seventh triple-digit rating in a row.
Trainer Bill Mott won the BC Mile in 2016. Jockey Junior Alverado will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick.
One thing that makes the mile such a great race is that it involves horses that are specialists at the distance, others that are stretching out, and others that are cutting back.
It’s interesting as well that while Europe produces some excellent turf horses, European-based runners don’t do all that well in the BC Mile, perhaps because most mile races in Europe are run on a straight track, and here they have to handle two turns.
I’m going to play a hunch and take Factor This for the win. I expect him to go to the lead and try and steal it in the front end. There will be a cavalry charge coming late, but I think the cut back in distance should benefit and his speed could carry him far enough. I’ll also use both Uni and Ivar in the exactas.
