2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping
For the third year in a row, the first of two days of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships has been dubbed ‘Future Stars Friday’ and will see five races featuring juvenile (two-year-old) horses. That will be followed Saturday by nine more races for horses aged three and older.
First up on Friday, November 6 at Keeneland is the Juvenile Turf Sprint, where they’ll be going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass. In 2019 the race was won by 3/2 favorite Four Wheel Drive.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Golden Pal Race Odds: 7-4
A runner up in his career debut at Gulfstream Park, Golden Pal then shipped over to the UK where he again ran second but beaten just a neck in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Back on home soil, he was the decisive winner of the Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga, going wire-to-wire while setting blazing fractions and just missing the track record by a whisker. He’ll come in off a layoff of more than two months, and draws a tough outside post.
Trainer Wesley Ward and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. teamed up to win the race last year.
2020 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: After Five Race Odds 9-1
Maryland-bred colt After Five is still looking for his first win after two consecutive runner-up finishes. Last out in the (G3) Futurity Stakes at Belmont he broke a bit slow from the gate and found himself shuffled to last of six runners as they came off the turn.
Once he found running room he showed good speed in the stretch but couldn’t quite get to the winner before running out of track.
He’s another Wesley Ward trainee, jockey Jose Ortiz was second in the race last year.
2020 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Second Of July Race Odds: 12-1
The winner of the Futurity, Second Of July also found himself in some trouble in that race, and had to find a way through traffic as they came off the bend. After splitting horses at the top of the stretch he dug in and made the lead and then held off the fast-closing After Five by a half-length.
Prior to that he had won his maiden debut, once again splitting rivals at the top of the stretch to win at odds of 68-1.
The trainer is Phillip Gleaves, jockey Dylan Davis is tapped to ride.
2020 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Bodenheimer Race Odds: 8-1
Washington state-bred Bodenheimer started his career racing in Minnesota and has steadily moved up in class and sports a record of three wins in four lifetime starts.
Last out he scored a win at the track and distance when he shot out of the gate to lay down fast fractions on the lead in the Indian Summer Stakes. After opening up by more than three lengths in the stretch he tired late but was able to hang on for a one-length victory.
If successful in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint he would become the first Washington bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
He’s trained by Valorie Lund, Brian Hernandez Jr. will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick.
From a class and form perspective, Golden Pal is a deserving favorite here, but the two month layoff and outside post draw are reasons enough to try and beat him at such low odds.
If you like anyone but the favorite you’re going to get a pretty good price. At a short 5 1/2 furlongs early speed could be the deciding factor and I think Bodenheimer will be in front as they come off the turn. I’ll play him for the win, and use him with Golden Pal and Second of July in the exacta.
