Race 4 on the opening day of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships is the Juvenile Fillies Turf. The race is run at one mile on the Keeneland turf course.
Typically drawing a solid field of international horses, the 2019 Juvenile Fillies Turf was won by Maryland-bred Sharing at odds of 13-1.

2020 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Aunt Pearl Race Odds: 11-4
Irish-bred Aunt Pearl has made both of her first two lifetime starts in the United States, and has come away with the win both times.
She made her maiden debut at Churchill Downs racing one mile and took the field wire-to-wire to win by an easy five lengths. She then stepped up to graded-stakes racing and won the (G2) Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland in similar fashion, going to the front out of the gate and hitting the wire first by 2 1/2.
Trainer Brad Cox tries for his first Juvenile Fillies Turf win. Jockey Florent Geroux was the winner in 2015.
2020 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Campanelle Race Odds: 4-1
Irish-bred filly Campanelle is undefeated in three starts since grabbing her maiden win at first try at Gulfstream Park where she put up a solid 96 Equibase speed figure.
Since then she has raced twice overseas, first at Royal Ascot where she won the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at five furlongs. She then shipped to France where she faced two-year-old colts and came away the wire-to-wire winner in the Group 1 Darley Prix Mony going six furlongs.
Now she’ll try to stretch out again for the mile.
Trainer Wesley Ward had the runner-up in this race in 2014. European star jockey Frankie Detorri will ride.
2020 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Plum Ali Race Odds: 5-1
Another filly in here that is undefeated in three lifetime starts, Plum Ali has a pair of stakes wins in that span.
Two starts back she rallied from mid-pack at the top of the stretch to pass the field and win the Mint Juvenile Fillies Stakes going one mile on the Kentucky Downs turf. She then made her graded-stakes debut in the (G3) Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont, where she came from off the pace to get up and win by 2 1/4 lengths.
Trainer Christophe Clement was second in this race in 2017 but looks for his first BC win. Jockey Joel Rosario has 11 BC wins, none in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
2020 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Spanishloveaffair Race Odds: 16-1
Kentucky bred filly Spanishloveaffair kicked off her career at Gulfstream where she blew away the field by 11 lengths in a one-mile turf race. Next out she moved to stakes racing where she tracked the pace before taking over to win by 1 1/2.
Last start she was the slight favorite over Aunt Pearl in the Jessamine while stretching out to 1 1/16 miles on the Keeneland turf. Again she tracked off the pace before taking aim on the leaders turning for home but couldn’t get to the winner, settling for second by 2 1/2 lengths.
Mark Casse trained the winner of the Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2015. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione will try for his first Breeders’ Cup win.

This shapes up to be one of the most wide-open races on the first day of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup, and one where I believe the US-based runners hold a slight edge over their European rivals.
All things being equal I always like a horse coming back from a win at the track, and getting a slight cut back in distance should also be a plus for Aunt Pearl and I’ll take her for the win. With lots of speed up front, Spanishloveaffair should get a good stalking trip, and I’ll use her underneath in the exacta.
