2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Handicapping
Race 4 on Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card, the Filly & Mare Turf is a tough 1 3/16 mile test for female horses aged three and older on the Keeneland grass course.
In a race where European-bred or based horses are always prominent – having won 14 of 21 races, including the last four years in a row – Irish mare Iridessa won the 2019 event at odds of 13-1.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Rushing Fall Race Odds: 63-20
A true superstar in the world of horse racing, Rushing Fall has made 14 lifetime starts and has won 11 of those, with two runner-up finishes. She also takes on all of the toughest challengers, with 13 of her starts coming in graded-stakes company.
She comes into the Filly & Mare Turf riding a three-race win streak on the season. Two starts back on the Keeneland turf going 1 1/16 miles she stalked a very good rival throughout before taking over in deep stretch and getting the win in track-record time, while scoring a lifetime best Equibase speed figure.
Trainer Chad Brown has won the F&M Turf four times, with jockey Javier Castellano in the saddle for two of those.
2020 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Mean Mary Race Odds: 5-1
She only graduated to stakes racing this year, but Mean Mary has been almost unbeatable, opening the season with three consecutive wins in Grade 2 and 3 stakes. Three wins in a row came in gate-to-wire fashion at distances up to 1 3/8 miles.
Last out she gave Rushing Fall all that she could handle in the Diana. After setting the pace to the top of the stretch she battled head-to-head with that one to eventually lose by just a neck in a race time that was just 2/10ths of a second off the track record.
Trainer Graham Motion won this race in 2010. Luis Saez gets the riding assignment.
2020 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Starship Jubilee Race Odds: 12-1
A winner of five of six in 2020, Starship Jubilee is a mare you can just never count out as she’s won exactly half of her 38 lifetime starts and seven of her last nine.
She’s the kind of runner that likes to sit back off the pace and then unleash a strong kick down the lane, a style she used to perfection last out in the (G1) Woodbine Mile to get up and win by a length.
Woodbine-based trainer Kevin Attard tries for his first Breeders’ Cup win. Jockey Florent Geroux has five BC wins and looks for his first in the Filly & Mare Turf.
2020 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Civil Union Race Odds: 16-1
A lightly raced five-year-old based in New York, Civil Union has been very good racing mostly at the lower levels, with five wins in eight starts including four straight wins this year.
Last out in the (G1) Flower Bowl at Belmont she settled near the back of the pack before finding an opening as they turned from home and was able to run down the leader despite chasing a fairly slow pace.
She should get lots more speed to run at here, but faces the toughest field of her life so far.
Trainer Shug McGaughey has nine BC wins on his resume but has yet to win the F&M Turf. Jockey Joel Rosario has 11 BC wins, primarily in sprint races.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick.
Having said off the top this race is typically won by European horses, none have made the picks here and I could be way off. The problem is that all of the best Euros are three-year-olds going against older horses, and don’t seem to have significant wins beyond a mile.
It’s a very interesting race to handicap in that it seems you bet against Rushing Fall at your peril. But all of the top contenders here are front-running speed types, with as many as three or four that will want to be up close to the pace.
That being the case, the speed could very well collapse and the race fall into the hands of a closer. I’m going to take a shot and put Civil Union on top and box her with Rushing Fall in the exacta.
