2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping
Day 2 of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships kicks off with the Filly & Mare Sprint, where they’ll race race seven furlongs on the Keeneland dirt course.
Open to fillies and mares age three and older, the 2019 F&M Sprint was won by 3-2 race favorite Cofveve, who capped a three-race winning streak with the victory.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Gamine Race Odds: 6-4
A disqualification for a medication infraction kept Gamine from posting a perfect four-for-four in her racing career prior to the running of the Kentucky Oaks. There she was made the heavy favorite and set the early pace, but was caught at the top of the stretch and eventually finished third.
Here she gets a cut back in distance that probably better suits her running style, but she will have to contend with other speed horses for perhaps the first time in her career.
Trainer Bob Baffert has 15 Breeders’ Cup wins but has yet to win the F&M Sprint. Jockey John Velazquez has 16 BC wins, but none in the F&M Sprint.
2020 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Serengeti Empress Race Odds: 7-2
With blazing speed out of the gate, it’s expected that Serengeti Empress will go right to the front here and try to run the rest of the field off their feet.
Last out in the (G1) Derby City Distaff she did just that but was nipped at the wire. In her start two back the plan worked to perfection in the (G1) Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga when she cleared the field early and hung on for a 1 length win. Both of those races were at 7 furlongs.
She’s trained by Tom Amoss, Luis Saez will be in the saddle.
2020 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Bell’s The One Race Odds: 13-2
With at least two and possibly three speed horses setting a fast pace up front, a closer like Bell’s The One could be the main beneficiary if that early speed collapses.
Last out she came from back in the pack to just get up and win by a nose in the Derby City over Serengeti Empress. Three starts back she was able to close into a more moderate pace to again come from the back and win the (G3) Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill by 3 lengths.
The trainer is Neil Pessin, Corey Lanerie gets the call to ride.
2020 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Speech Race Odds: 16-1
A fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Oaks last out was the first out of the money finish for Speech in seven starts, and she had three wins – although in one of those she finished second but got the win with the DQ to Gamine – and three runner-up finishes.
Seven furlongs is shorter than she has been running lately and she’ll need to find more early speed. She does have a win on the Keeneland dirt going 1 1/16 miles in the (G1) Ashland Stakes two starts back.
Michael McCarthy is the trainer and has a win in the 2017 BC Dirt Mile to his name. Javier Castellan is the jock and he’s won 11 BC races, but never the F&M Sprint.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick.
I’ve been a fan of Serengeti Empress for a couple of seasons, and while I don’t think it will be easy, I’m going to pick her for the win here.
This will be her third try at getting Breeders’ Cup win, but her previous two efforts were in the 1 1/16 miles Juvenile Fillies (2018) and the 1 1/8 miles Distaff (2019). The seven furlongs here seems to be her perfect distance. She has also been consistently facing much tougher fields than most of the others in here.
