2020 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicapping
The all-female version of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the Distaff is open to fillies and mares aged three and older and they’ll be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Keeneland dirt course.
The 2019 Distaff was won by Argentina-bred Blue Prize, who came rolling from mid-pack off the turn to sweep by the pace setters in mid-stretch and win by 1 1/2 lengths at 8-1, paying $19.80 for a $2 win ticket.

2020 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Monomoy Girl Race Odds: 6-4
Already the comeback story of the year, Monomoy Girl won this race in 2018 in a year when she won seven of eight starts and was second in the other.
She missed all of 2019 with various illness and injury and it looked like her career may have been over. But she’s come back with a vengeance in 2020, winning all three of her starts. Last out she took the (G1) La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs over a pair she’ll be facing here.
Brad Cox and Florent Geroux were the winning trainer/jockey combination in 2018.
2020 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Swiss Skydiver Race Odds: 9-4
The filly that beat the boys in the 2020 Preakness Stakes, Swiss Skydiver has raced nine times at nine different tracks this season and has only finished out of the money in the very first of those. She’s also won five of her last seven with two runner-up finishes.
One of those losses also came against males when she ran second in the (G1) Blue Grass Stakes, a result that qualified her to run in the Kentucky Derby. She skipped the Derby for the Kentucky Oaks, where she was second as the heavy favorite. That result was quickly forgotten when she came back to win the Preakness over Derby winner Authentic.
Trainer Ken McPeek has been second or third in 16 Breeders’ Cup races without a win. Jockey Robby Albarado looks for his first BC win since 2011.
2020 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Valiance Race Odds: 14-1
A lightly raced four-year-old, Valiance comes to the BC Distaff riding a three-race win streak where she has run faster each time out.
The most recent of those came at the Keeneland track and at the distance, where she stalked just off the pace in the (G1) Juddmonte Spinster Stakes, tracking just off the early pace before going to the front off the final turn and going on to win by 3/4 lengths.
Trainer Todd Pletcher is a two-time winner of the BC Distaff. Jockey Luis Saez tries for his first.
2020 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Ollie’s Candy Race Odds: 14-1
Fourth in this race last year, the hard-luck Ollie’s Candy never runs a bad race but has trouble getting wins, finishing second or third in every one of her five starts in 2020, all of those at the Grade 1 level.
Last out she made a late bid but couldn’t quite get to Valiance in the Juddmonte. Prior to that, she made a late bid and couldn’t quite get to the winner in the (G1) Clement Hirsch at Del Mar. If only her races were 1 1/2 miles, she might have multiple wins.
Trainer John Sadler has been second and third in this race, while jockey Joel Rosario has 11 BC wins, but none in the Distaff.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick.
On paper this is a two-horse race between the star veteran Monomy Girl and the iron filly Swiss Skydiver. If forced to chose I’d lean toward Monomoy Girl, simply because I’ve seen Swiss Skydiver lose a race before, something I’ve never actually seen with Monomoy Girl.
With no value in either win bet, I’ll likely put those two in both the win-place spots in a trifecta, and use both Valiance and Ollie’s Candy underneath in the third spot.
