2020 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping
A little more than a sprint but a little less than a distance event, the Dirt Mile is open to horses aged three and older, obviously tasked with racing one mile on the Keeneland dirt course. It’s race #3 on Day 2 of the Breeders’ Cup.
In a race where pace is often the key, Spun To Run went to the lead right of the gate last year and controlled the speed all the way to the wire, winning by 2 3/4 lengths over heavy favourite Omaha Beach. At odds of 9-1, Spun To Run returned $20.20 for a $2 win ticket.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Complexity Race Odds: 5-2
Coming in off a win at one mile on the dirt at Belmont Park, Complexity gets the nod as the lukewarm pre-race favourite.
Up against a small field of only three other runners in that race, Complexity tracked off the pacesetter for the first 3/4 miles before taking over on the turn and going on to win by more than two lengths. In doing so he recorded an eye-catching 115 Equibase speed figure.
Prior to that he duelled for the lead throughout the (G1) Forego Stakes at Saratoga before being caught just before the wire by a horse that had surged form the back of the pack. He’ll be making his first start at Keeneland, so it’s notable that both of his lifetime stakes wins have been at Belmont Park.
Trainer Chad Brown has 15 BC wins, with 13 of those in turf races, and has never won the Dirt Mile. Jockey Jose Ortiz also tries for his first Dirt Mile win.
2020 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Mr. Freeze Race Odds: 9-1
After starting 2020 with a Grade 1 runner-up finish and a Grade 2 win, Mr. Freeze hit a rough patch over the summer and in fact had two consecutive off-the-board finishes before turning things around to win the (G2) Hagyard Fayette Stakes at Keeneland over a pretty solid field.
For his career he has six wins and 12 in-the-money finishes in 16 lifetime starts.
Trainer Dale Romans has three BC wins and was second in this race in 2011. Jockey Manny Franco looks for his second career BC win.
2020 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Sharp Samurai Race Odds: 12-1
Exclusively racing in California at Santa Anita and Del Mar, Sharp Samurai doesn’t win many races. but he takes on top level horses and almost always hits the board.
As evidence, since July 2018 he has made 11 consecutive starts at the graded-stakes level and has one win, six runner-up finishes and two thirds in that span. Ultra consistent, in everyone of those races he managed a triple-digit Equibase speed figure.
Trainer Mark Glatt goes for his first BC win. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. won this race last year.
2020 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Owendale Race Odds: 12-1
Another one that is usually just in the edges, Owendale has a win and two runner-up finishes in his four starts in 2020.
Typically more of a late runner, he’s been much closer to the pace in his last two starts in the (G2) Alysheba Stakes and (G3) Pimlico Special. In both he managed runner-up finishes where he tired late going 1 1/16 miles. Now he gets a cut back in distance and it will be interesting to see whether he tries to press the pace again or lays back.
Brad Cox is the trainer, jockey Florent Geroux was second in this race in 2016.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick.
Of all the races on Breeders’ Cup weekend, this may be the best one to toss the favorites and look for a long-shot win. To my eye the top two here don’t stand out, and of those not listed above, the field also includes 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War Of Will, and Art Collector, who earlier this year ran off a four-race win streak and was once the Kentucky Derby favorite.
I’m going to lean toward Mr. Freeze here for the win, but try to hit a bigger payout by using him as well as Sharp Samurai and Owendale in a three-horse exacta box.
