2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic Handicapping
The one everyone waits for, the $6 million Classic closes out the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, with the winner often going on to capture US Horse of The Year honours.
This year’s race has drawn a solid field of 10 horses aged three and older including both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winners of 2020, the disqualified winner of the 2019 Derby, and five others with Grade 1 wins on their resume.
Last year Vino Rosso burst from mid-pack coming off the final turn and powered through the stretch to win at odds of 9-2 and paying $11.20 for the win.

2020 Classic Free Pick & Handicapping: Improbable Race Odds: 11-4
The four-year-old Improbable burst on the scene in 2018 by winning his first three races and went into last year as a Kentucky Derby contender. He was flying a bit under the radar after an erratic three-year-old season, but he’s been very good in 2020, winning his last three starts in Grade 1 company.
Last out he stamped himself as the Classic favourite when rallying from the back of a five-horse field in the (G1) Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, blowing by main rival Maximum Security and going on to win by more than four lengths.
Prior to that he captured the (G1) Whitney Stakes at Saratoga ahead of two rivals he’ll face again on Saturday.
Trainer Bob Baffert has three BC Classic wins to his name. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was the winning rider last year.
2020 Classic Free Pick & Handicapping: Tiz The Law Race Odds: 7-2
The Belmont Stakes winner back in June, Tiz The Law has been almost unbeatable over the past year. He comes into the Classic with six wins in eight lifetime starts to go with a second and a third, and that third was run over a sloppy track he just didn’t like.
His reputation took a bit of a hit last out when running second in the Kentucky Derby when he had every chance to win as they moved through the stretch but was just not able to get by the front-running Authentic.
He’s facing the toughest field of his career in the Classic and is taking on older horses for the first time.
Trainer Barclay Tagg looks for his first Breeders’ Cup win. Jockey Manny Franco has been aboard for his last seven races.
2020 Classic Free Pick & Handicapping: Maximum Security Race Odds: 4-1
A year ago it would have seemed almost unimaginable to get 4-1 on Maximum Security, when he was being touted as many as the best horse in the world.
After his Derby DQ he ran second in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth, but then reeled off six wins in a row in graded-stakes company all as the heavy post-time favorite. He was favored again last out in the Awesome Again, but offered little challenge to Improbable in that one.
Now the question is if he is really as good as he looked in the past, or was he padding his stats a bit going up against inferior horses?
He’s another Bob Baffert trainee, Luis Saez will be back in the saddle.
2020 Classic Free Pick & Handicapping: Tom’s d’Etat Race Odds: 11-2
Crafty seven-year-old veteran Tom’s d’Etat has made 19 lifetime starts and won 11 of those, with two runner-up and two third place finishes.
Last out as the favorite in the (G1) Whitney he stumbled at the break and came away from the gate last of five, giving the field a five-length head start before rallying in the stretch to get up for third, 2 1/2 lengths behind winner Improbable.
Prior to that he won the (G2) Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill by more than four lengths. He opened 2020 with a win in the Oaklawn Mile.
Trainer Albert Stall Jr. won the BC Classic in 2010, while Joel Rosario was the winning jockey in 2018.
Here’s My 2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic Free Pick.
There’s several different ways to handicap the 2020 Classic, and there’s an argument to be made for several runners in here. If Improbable is as good as he’s looked in his last couple he’s the horse to beat. If Maximum Security just suffered an off-day last out, getting 4-1 might be a gift. Then you have to wonder about the three-year-olds in Tiz The Law and Authentic, and if they are better than their elders.
I’m going to go in a different direction and play the wily veteran Tom’s d’Etat for the win. After the break he never really had a chance last out and the race was run very slow, yet he was still closing on the front-runners in the stretch when he ran out of track.
I think there’s going to be lots of early speed here, and he can sit off the pace and try to run them down in the lane much like Vino Rosso did in 2019. I’ll also use him with Improbable in the exacta box.
