2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Handicapping
The second of the two divisions of the 2020 Arkansas Derby offers a much better field and and betting value for handicappers.
Just like in Race 1, Race 2 of the Arkansas Derby is for horses aged three, racing 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. It offers 2020 Kentucky Derby qualifying points on a 100-40-20-10 scale to the top four finishers.
While each of the two races has 11 entries, as of Friday Bovada is only listing nine betting interests for each.
Odds listed here are from Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Free Pick & Handicapping: Nadal Race Odds: 27-20
Unraced as a two-year-old in 2019, Nadal has been unbeatable in his three races since January, getting his maiden win first time out and then following that up with wins in the (G2) San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita and the (G2) Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn.
In the most recent of those he was hard-pressed to grab a 3/4-length win over a 83-1 longshot, and he faces much tougher competition here.
He’s another top Kentucky Derby contender trained by Bob Baffert, Joel Rosario will ride.
2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Free Pick & Handicapping: King Guillermo Race Odds: 4-1
The winner of the (G2) Tampa Bay Derby by more than four lengths at odds of 49-1, King Guillermo probably shouldn’t have been flying under the radar as much as he was going into that race. He’s now won two of his three last races, scoring a plus-100 Equibase speed figure in all three. His 110 speed rating for the Tampa Bay Derby is tops in this field.
The trainer is Juan Avila, Samy Camacho is the rider.
2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Free Pick & Handicapping: Wells Bayou Race Odds: 11-2
A colt that seems to be coming into his own, Wells Bayou goes into the race off a solid wire-to-wire win in the (G1) Louisiana Derby after a runner-up finish in the (G3) Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn, a race that he also led until the top of the stretch.
He’s going to have to overcome the tough outside post here, but it’s expected he’ll gun for the early lead and hang on as far as he can.
Trained by Brad Cox, Florent Geroux will be in the saddle.
2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Free Pick & Handicapping: Storm The Court Race Odds: 14-1
The 46-1 surprise winner of the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Storm The Court has yet to find the winner’s circle in two tries since then, running fourth in the (G2) San Vicente – although just two lengths back of the winner, Nadal – and then a well-beaten third next out in the (G2) San Felipe.
This will be his first start outside of Southern California.
He’s trained by Peter Eurton, Flavian Prat gets the call to ride.
Here’s my 2020 Arkansas Derby Race 2 Free Pick.
This should prove to be a very good race to close out the 2020 Oaklawn Park racing season, and several of these could pull off the win. I love the way King Guillermo ran at Tampa Bay where he beat some very good horses, and so here I’ll play him to win and hope for a repeat of that effort.
I’ll also box him in the exacta with Nadal.
