2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Handicapping
The Filly and Mare Turf is the first real distance race of Breeders’ Cup weekend, as the field of 12 will be tasked with racing 1 1/4 miles on the Santa Anita grass. Open to females aged three and older, the race offers a total purse of $2 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
European bred or based horses tend to do very well in this race, and so it’s no surprise to see eight of the 12 entries shipping in from across the pond. But they’re up against a very tough defending champ that was bred in Ireland but has done all of her best racing in the US.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Handicapping: Sistercharlie Odds: 1-1
A once-in-a-lifetime kind of horse, Sistercharlie has raced 14 times since December 2016, and she has won 10 of those, finishing second three other times. She has won six in a row going back to July 2018 – including the 2018 version of this race – and the only time she lost in her last eight it was only by a head.
She always makes it exciting, winning those six straight by a combined six lengths, but she almost always makes it to the winner’s circle. Chad Brown is the trainer, while regular rider John Velazquez gets the call once again.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Handicapping: Fanny Logan Race Odds: 14-1
While she hasn’t been racing at the top level of many of those in here, what stands out about Fanny Logan is that she is four-for-four at the 1 1/4 miles distance, easily the best in the race as far as that statistic goes.

It’s also notable that she seems very versatile no matter the surface, having won on tracks rated good-soft, good-fast, good, and soft. Trainer John Gosden is one of the best in Europe and he wouldn’t have shipped her over if he didn’t think she had a chance. Franco Detorri will be in the saddle.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Handicapping: Villa Marina Race Odds: 10-1
A German-bred that has done all her racing in France, Villa Marina is another one that seems to like the 1 1/4 miles, having racked up three wins and two second-place finishes at the distance. A three-year-old filly, it has taken her awhile to get to the top level of racing, but she comes to the Breeders’ Cup off a Group 1 win.
Her problem might be taking to the firm surface at Santa Anita, as most of her best races seem to have come over soft ground. She’s trained by Carl Laffon-Parias and Olivier Peslier will be in the irons.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Iridessa Race Odds: 6-1
Also a three-year-old filly, Iridessa has been racing at a much tougher level than Villa Marina, having started six consecutive Group 1 races in her native Ireland and England. She only has two wins in those races, however, although she did win her only start at the 1 1/4 mile distance.
She’s trained by Joseph O’Brien, and Wayne Lorden will b the rider.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Free Pick
There is no such thing as a sure thing in horse racing, but sometimes you can get pretty close. Without fanfare, Sistercharlie is the best bet of the weekend.
