2026 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes Handicapping

Previously known as the Sword Dancer Stakes, the race was renamed this year in honour of trainer Christophe Clement who passed away last summer. Clement’s horses won the Sword Dancer five times, including Gufo winning back-to-back in 2021-22.

The race is open to horses age three and older, and for 2026 has drawn a very balanced field of seven starters with none higher than 8-1 in the morning line odds. They’ll race 1 1/2 miles on the Saratoga turf.

In addition to the bulk of the prize money, the winner will receive automatic entry into the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf, to be held October 31 at Keeneland Race Course.

2026 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Minaret Station Race Odds: 3-1

The tepid morning line favourite, Minaret Station comes in off a blanket finish third in the (G2) Bowling Green Stakes at Saratoga a month ago.

That race was at 1 3/8 miles, and he was able to make up four lengths on the eventual winner as they came through the stretch. He’s only missed the board once in seven lifetime starts, with three wins.

2026 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Program Trading Race Odds: 7-2

Coming in off of two straight wins at Monmouth Park, Program Trading is the most accomplished runner in the field with seven lifetime wins in 15 starts.

Eight of his last 10 races have been at the graded-stakes level, including last out when he won the (G2) United Nations Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths going 1 3/8 miles.

Fort George Race Odds: 9-2

After four consecutive races in Dubai, UK-bred Fort George shipped to the US and ran second by just a nose in the Bowling Green.

He pressed the wire-to-wire winner throughout but just failed to get by. Now he gets another crack at that one with 1/8 of a mile more to work with.

Ancient Egypt Race Odds: 5-1

Making his US debut, Ancient Egypt has been going against some of the best across the pond, running second in both of his last two at the Group 1 level in France and Group 2 in the UK.

Last out he was beaten just a head by Maltese Cross, who ran second as the favourite in this year’s Epsom Derby, the top race for three-year-olds in the UK. This will be his first start against older horses.

Here’s My 2026 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes Free Pick

Miguel Clement took over his father’s stable last summer and has an entry here in Tawny Port, the longest shot on the board at 8-1. He’s the sentimental favourite to win, but I can’t see him getting much more than a minor award against this group.

At his ML odds, Ancient Egypt is a very tempting pick based on the company he has been keeping overseas. But you never quite know how a horse will handle the surface racing in the States for the first time, so I’m only going to use him in the exacta.

My pick will be Fort George. I think his previous start on the track in the Bowling Green will serve him well, and I also think he was the likely winner of that one if he hadn’t run out of track. Here he gets a bit more distance and will have a very similar pace set up.
