2026 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
The first Grade 1 race for three-year-olds following the Triple Crown series, the Haskell Stakes not only offers a large total purse, but the winner receives an automatic entry onto the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
One of six stakes races on the Monmouth Saturday card, the Haskell is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Monmouth dirt course. For 2026 the race has drawn a small but competitive field of seven, four of which made at least one appearance in the Triple Crown.

2026 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Further Ado Race Odds: 2-1
After running 11th as the slight post time favourite in the (G1) Kentucky Derby, Further Ado bounced back last out and won the 1 1/16 miles (G3) Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs.
He’s one that likes to be upfront pressing the early pace and after a pair of very solid five-furlong works leading up to this you can expect he’ll be forward right out of the gate once again.
2026 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Napoleon Solo Race Odds: 5-2
The (G1) Preakness Stakes winner, Napoleon Solo is a bit of an all-or-nothing horse, as he’s won three of his five lifetime starts and finished out of the money in the other two.
He’s very likely going to be the early pacesetter here, and comes in off an eye-catching bullet work of 46.3 going four furlongs. That’ a good indication that they plan to go to the front and try to take the field wire-to-wire.
The Puma Race Odds: 7-2
Something of the buzz horse going into the Kentucky Derby, The Puma was a late scratch from that race due to a skin infection and now makes his first start in more than three months.
Never out of the money in four lifetime starts – with one win – this will be his first start outside of Florida as he’s raced twice at Gulfstream and twice at Tampa Bay Downs.
Ocelli Race Odds: 6-1
Purchased for a mere $12,000, Ocelli has put almost $1 million in the bank despite the fact he has yet to win a race in nine lifetime starts.
He had a brief lead in deep stretch in both the Kentucky Derby and last out in the (G3) Ohio Derby but failed to hold on. He’s a late runner who will need some pace to close into to hit the board again.
Here’s My 2026 Haskell Stakes Free Pick
While there are some things to like about the top two favourites here, I find myself unable to trust that either of them will win the race. In the case of Further Ado, his wins have come against somewhat weak fields and that isn’t the case here.
And as noted above, Napoleon Solo could be as likely to miss the board completely as he is to win. And given that the two of them represent the early speed here, they could duel each other right out of the race.
I’m going to try to get a bit of value and play The Puma for the win. There is some concern about the long layoff between races, but the other side of the coin is that he comes in fresh and his last workout was very good. I’ll hope that he’ll be able to at least stay in contact stalking behind the leaders and use his strong finishing kick to run them down at the end.
I’ll also bet that Ocelli runs his record to 0-for-10, but once again hits the board in the exacta.
The weather could result in a sloppy track on Saturday. Of the listed starters, Iron Honor (3-1) has a win on a track rated good and long shot Star Sweeper (30-1) has run second on a track rated sloppy, although beaten by 15 lengths.
None of the others have raced on an off track.
