The Pelicans fell on Opening Night in Toronto but they’re back in the Big Easy for some home cooking and the first of 41 home games on the season against the Mavericks fine European duo.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks handled the Washington Wizards in their first game of the season Wednesday at home, 108–100.
The Mavs actually had a big lead going into the fourth but Washington won the quarter by fifteen to make it a little interesting at the end.
Luka Doncic had 34 points and nine rebounds to lead the way. Kristaps Porzingis netted 23 and had four boards. The two combined to turn it over ten times.

The rest of Dallas’ starting five is underwhelming but the bench is a bit intriguing. Jalen Brunson leads a second unit that features Tim Hardaway, Seth Curry, Justin Jackson, and Dorian Finney-Smith.
All five of those guys finished a net-positive on Wednesday and combined to go +43 against the lowly Wizards. I like all of them in DFS, too, as the Pelicans’ pace will offer plenty of chances to pad the stats.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans lost on Opening Night in Toronto, in overtime, 130–122. They set a torrid pace, which explains all the scoring despite both teams shooting down around 40 percent.

Jrue Holiday played over 41 minutes to lead the team; Brandon Ingram played 35 and led the team with 22 points; JJ Redick scored 16 on 4/6 from three-point distance; Lonzo Ball recorded 8/5/5 and missed all four of his field goal attempts from inside the arc; Derrick Favors had six points and five rebounds in 20 minutes.
That rounds out the starting five. Josh Hart played a team-high 28 minutes off the bench and scored 15 points with 10 rebounds.
Six other guys played between 11:55 and 19:37 off the bench, including the third of their three first-round picks from this year’s draft: Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who went 1/10 from the field.
It was an underwhelming start to the season for a team lots of people are excited about at least being competitive in the West. Not only did Zion Williamson, the first overall pick who is expected to miss the first two months of the season after undergoing meniscus surgery, not play but neither did Jaxson Hayes.
Hayes was just a freshman out of Texas when the Pelicans traded down from four to get the pick they used on Alexander-Walker and take Hayes at eight.
I believe it was a healthy DNP for Hayes, who is working on putting on weight before playing big minutes in the league. He was a volleyball player for most of his childhood but he’s got the raw skills to be a pretty good NBA player one day, as evidenced by where he went in the draft.

I’m not confident about the sides. It wouldn’t surprise me if either side ran up a double-digit win in a game that will be fast and loose on defense.
So look at this total. Taking the over on New Orleans will probably be tough, as most everybody knows it wants to play fast. Dallas will certainly oblige, though.
