This Big10 matchup features the 5th ranked Badgers traveling to face Illinois.
Wisconsin comes in after a big win over Maryland, while Illinois lost to Minnesota..
The Wisconsin offense is centered around the running game, but QB Alex Hornibrook has been a serviceable game manager this season.
Hornibrook was serviceable against the Terps, as he finished the game 16-24 for 225 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception.
The Illini gave up just 47 yards through the air last week, but that was a product of not being able to slow down the Gophers rushing attack. Hornibrook should have another serviceable game, and not risk too many shots down the field.
Jonathan Taylor should be able to run all over the Illinois defense, as he ran for 126 yards and a score last week. Taylor is one of the best backs in the country and a 150 yard effort with 2 scores should be expected this week.
Quintez Cephus has been the most consistent receiver in the Badgers passing game, although he had a quiet game against Maryland. He caught 2 passes for 45 yards but is a threat to find the end zone each week.
The Wisconsin defense did a great job shutting down the Maryland passing attack, as they allowed just 125 yards through the air and under 45% completion percentage. They will need to slow down the running game after giving up over 5 yards per carry to the top two Terps backs.
The Illini passing game was underwhelming last week, as Jeff George Jr. was 18-23 for only 128 yards through the air. He will need to play much better against a very good Badgers secondary, but I don’t see him stepping up to the plate.
Ravon Banner couldn’t do much against the Minnesota front seven. He ran the ball 18 times but only picked up 57 yards on the ground. His longest run was for 9 yards and if he isn’t able to get into a rhythm early then it will be a long day for the Illini.
Cam Thomas was the other back in the backfield and made plays last week. He ran the ball 10 times for 79 yards and is an explosive option for the Illini attack.
Ricky Smalling seemed to be the only threat in the receiving corps last week. He caught 8 passes for 71 yards and a score. If he can find holes in the secondary he should put up good numbers again this week.
The Illinois defense was physically dominated last week, as they gave up 280 yards on the ground. The Gophers top two running backs both averaged over 5 yards per carry and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Wisconsin run for over 350 yards as a group.
