Washington State Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs Odds & Previous Games
San Diego State is listed at -137 on the moneyline, with Washington State returning +115. The Aztecs are favored by 2.5 points, and the total is 48.5.
The spread sits below a field goal, leaving little separation between these teams in the betting odds. Neither has done enough to deserve a substantial price.
Washington State’s recent losses include Oregon State 48-30, Utah State 17-16, Fresno State 26-6 and Arizona 34-24. The Cougars have been competitive at times without finding a way to finish.
San Diego State beat Fresno State 26-23 and Texas State 31-29. The Aztecs also suffered lopsided defeats against Oregon State 66-14 and Toledo 41-16.
SDSU is 2-3 in its L5 games, while Washington State’s only win came against Duquesne earlier this season.
The Aztecs have gone Over the total in their L5 games. That streak reflects how dramatically their recent contests have differed from one another.
San Diego State is 9-1 at home over the past 2 seasons. That record provides some context for why the Aztecs are favored despite their overall struggles.

Aztecs Stats
San Diego State has scored 212 points through 8 games, averaging 26.5 PPG. The Aztecs have accumulated 1,408 passing yards and 1,209 rushing yards.
Javion Kinnard leads the ground attack with 526 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Lucky Sutton has also become an important contributor since returning to the lineup.
The Aztecs have allowed 289 points, averaging 36.1 PPG. Opponents are gaining approximately 461.5 total YPG against their defense.
San Diego State’s defense has been generous enough to make an average offense look dangerous.
The Aztecs have recorded 16 sacks, 6 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries. Those occasional big plays haven’t prevented opponents from piling up yardage.
Jaylon Hawkins has emerged as an explosive receiving threat. His speed also makes him dangerous in the return game.
Receiver De’yhare Overstreet-Glover is unavailable, while Donovan Brown has returned to active status. Those changes affect the depth of SDSU’s passing attack.
San Diego State has struggled to get opponents off the field consistently. Even when its offense has produced enough to win, defensive breakdowns have kept games uncomfortable.
Cougars Stats
Washington State has scored 151 points through 8 games, averaging 18.9 PPG. The Cougars produce approximately 300 total YPG, including 120 on the ground.
Kirby Vorhees leads the team with 275 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Maxwell Woods has added 192 rushing yards.
Branden Ganashamoorthy has caught 30 passes for 401 yards and 3 TDs. He’s become one of Washington State’s more dependable offensive contributors.
Defensively, the Cougars have allowed 221 points, averaging 27.6 PPG. They’ve had trouble generating enough stops to compensate for their offensive limitations.
Washington State has recorded 9 sacks, 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. The limited takeaway production has made field position an ongoing problem.
Linebacker Keith Brown leads the defense with 60 tackles. His work against the run has been important for a unit frequently asked to defend extended possessions.
Receiver Tony Freeman is out for the season, while Darrius Clemons is questionable with an ankle injury. Safety Jeremiah Bernard is also questionable, adding another concern for Washington State.
Cougars vs. Aztecs QB Matchup
Stone Saunders is starting for San Diego State for the second consecutive game. Coach Sean Lewis made that decision with Jayden Denegal still dealing with an ankle injury.
Saunders completed 23 of 33 passes for 369 yards and 2 TDs against Colorado State. He also threw 2 interceptions, including a costly pick-6.
His performance demonstrated considerable arm talent. The next step is making better decisions when defenses disguise coverage or apply pressure.
Denegal has thrown for 896 yards and 7 TDs this season. He’s questionable for Saturday, although Saunders has already been named the starter.
Washington State counters with Owen Eshelman, who has replaced Caden Pinnick as the starter. The redshirt freshman is preparing for his third consecutive start.
Eshelman has thrown for 480 yards, 2 TDs and 2 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 169 yards and a score.
Against Oregon State, Eshelman threw for 289 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for another 136 yards and a score. His ability to escape pressure makes him a difficult player to contain.

Pinnick threw for 952 yards, 3 TDs and 5 interceptions before losing the starting job. Washington State has turned to Eshelman to give its offense a different dimension.
Both starting QBs are redshirt freshmen with limited experience. Saunders has displayed impressive downfield ability, while Eshelman can create problems with his legs.
Washington State Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs bottom line: Both teams are breaking in young QBs, and whichever offense limits mistakes while taking advantage of defensive weaknesses should have the upper hand.

- Washington State is 8-3 against the spread after a loss in their last 11 games.
- San Diego State is 9-1 straight up at home in their last 10 games.

Cougars Aztecs Free Pick: SDSU -2.5
Here is my Cougars Aztecs free pick: I’m laying SDSU -2.5. The Aztecs have won 3 of 4 at home, and Washington State hasn’t won a road game all season. With a spread below a field goal, I like the price on the home side.
San Diego State has its own problems, especially on defense. I’m not asking this team to dominate anybody, but the Cougars haven’t shown much ability to capitalize when opponents leave the door open.
Neither team belongs on a highlight reel, but somebody still has to cover the number.
My concern is SDSU getting dragged into another sloppy game. The Aztecs have made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves with defensive breakdowns, and Washington State has enough speed to punish mistakes.
Still, San Diego State has been better at Snapdragon Stadium, and this is a manageable spread. I don’t need a blowout or some miraculous fourth-quarter rally to get paid.
I’m expecting a competitive game, but I trust the Aztecs to make the decisive plays late. Washington State can keep it close without getting the win. I’ll take SDSU -2.5.
