This Big Ten matchup features the Golden Gophers traveling to face the Boilermakers.
Minnesota comes in after a close loss to Maryland, while Purdue was handled easily by Michigan.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
It was a back and forth contest against the Terrapins, but the new offense under head coach PJ Fleck still has progress to make before he can become a second tier Big Ten program.
Conor Rhoda struggled, completing just 13-26 for 229 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He will need to play much better against the Boilermakers. Look for him to throw for 250 yards and a handful of scores.
Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith both struggled to get the ground game going. Brooks ran the ball 12 times for 39 yards and a score, while Smith had 18 carries for an ineffective 35 yards and a score.
The Minnesota running game will need to make major strides in this game in order to avoid the upset.
The major bright spot from the loss to Maryland is that Rhoda spread the ball to multiple receivers, and connect with Tyler Johnson for three long passes for 69 receiving yards.
The Golden Gophers defensive line was manhandled for most of the game, as they gave up 5.9 yards per carry and over 200 yards on the ground to the Terrapins top rushers. If they can’t slow down the rushing attack of the Boilermakers it will be a long day for the front seven.
Purdue comes in off of a tough loss to the Wolverines, where the offense was largely ineffective for a majority of the game.
QB David Blough was replaced by Elijah Sindelar, and he was able to throw the team’s lone touchdown on the day.
The Boilermakers running game was nonexistent, as expected against the Wolverines tough front seven.
None of the running backs were able to get anything going but I expect that to change this week as the Minnesota front line is vulnerable.
Brycen Hopkins had 3 catches for 29 yards and a score, but wasn’t much of a threat in the passing game besides the touchdown. He should be able to provide a security blanket for his QB this week, and I think he will find the end zone again.
The Boilermakers defense played a really good game for 3 quarters…even going into the locker room with a 10-7 lead. The run defense will need to shore itself up and if they can win the battles in the trenches they may pick up the upset.

Free Week 6 NCAA Football Pick
The Golden Gophers should do enough to pick up the victory, but it won’t be by more than a field goal.

The Golden Gophers defense will make enough plays to slow down the Boilermakers offense and come out with the W.
