Gamecocks vs. Aggies Gameday
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks visit the New Mexico State Aggies on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces. Kickoff is 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Jacksonville State enters at 5-2, while New Mexico State stands at 3-4.
Charles Kelly’s Gamecocks have won four straight and are 3-0 in Conference USA. Their 1-2 road record leaves something to prove.
Winning away from home hasn’t come easily.
Jacksonville State wants to protect its conference lead, while New Mexico State has a chance to disrupt the race.
Tony Sanchez’s Aggies are 2-1 in conference play after beating Sam Houston. They’re coming off their first road win of the season. Confidence should be higher heading into this one.
Jacksonville State has enjoyed a 15-day break since its previous game. That gives Kelly’s team extra preparation time for a difficult road assignment.
These programs have split their first two meetings. New Mexico State won the previous matchup in Las Cruces, giving the Aggies some welcome history on their side. History doesn’t block or tackle, though.
It’s Week 9, Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. New Mexico State Aggies, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Jacksonville State defeated FIU 27-24, Kennesaw State 27-26 and Middle Tennessee 23-13. The Gamecocks also beat Georgia Southern 31-27 before losing 29-27 to Ohio.

Those two results couldn’t look much different. The Gamecocks dominated the rematch after losing a defensive struggle the previous year.

Aggies Stats
New Mexico State averages 24.6 PPG and 371.7 total YPG. The Aggies generate 220.4 passing YPG and 151.3 rushing YPG. Their offense has produced some strong performances, but consistency remains an issue.
James Jones leads the backfield with 777 rushing yards and four TDs. He rushed for 178 yards against Sam Houston, showing how dangerous he can be when given room.
He’s been their most dependable offensive weapon.
Defensively, the Aggies allow 25.4 PPG and 333.3 total YPG. Opponents average just 109.1 rushing YPG, making New Mexico State particularly tough against the run.
New Mexico State’s front seven has been impressive, but the Aggies still need better execution across the board.
The defense has recorded six interceptions and 17 sacks. That pressure has helped New Mexico State disrupt opposing offenses. The secondary still has vulnerable spots.
Turnovers remain a concern on offense. The Aggies carry a minus-five turnover margin, putting unnecessary pressure on their defense.
Safety Bernock Iya remains sidelined. His absence leaves Sanchez relying on younger players for defensive depth. That could matter against Jacksonville State’s versatile attack.
Gamecocks Stats
Jacksonville State averages 27.3 PPG and 390.6 total YPG. The Gamecocks produce 240.4 passing YPG and 150.1 rushing YPG. Their balanced attack has been difficult to contain when executing properly.
Deondre Johnson leads the receivers with 431 yards and three TDs. Jalen Likely has contributed 201 rushing yards and two TDs.
There’s enough talent here to create problems.
Defensively, Jacksonville State allows 22.7 PPG and 346.0 total YPG. Opponents average 189.6 passing YPG, reflecting the strength of the Gamecocks’ coverage.
The Gamecocks have six interceptions and 11 sacks. Safety Caleb Nix leads the defense with 43 tackles and two interceptions. He’s been reliable in the secondary.
Jacksonville State has yet to recover an opponent’s fumble. Its defense has still delivered timely stops throughout conference play.
Special teams have also helped the Gamecocks. Jamill Williams produced 102 kickoff-return yards against FIU, repeatedly improving field position.
Those hidden yards can make a difference. Jacksonville State has shown it can gain an advantage without relying entirely on its offense. Kelly will want that same attention to detail Wednesday.
Gamecocks vs. Aggies QB Matchup
Jacksonville State QB Caden Creel has completed 129 of 192 passes for 1,637 yards, 12 TDs and six interceptions. He’s also rushed for 500 yards and four TDs. His ability to make plays with his legs adds another problem for defenses.
Creel averages 305.3 total YPG, leading Conference USA. He’s particularly dangerous when coverage forces him outside the pocket.
Defenders can’t afford to lose track of him.
New Mexico State has used both Trey Hedden and Adam Damante at QB. Hedden has thrown for 906 yards, five TDs and six interceptions. Damante has 637 yards, six TDs and three interceptions.
Damante started the Aggies’ previous game against Sam Houston. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 160 yards, two TDs and one interception.
Wednesday’s starting assignment remains unconfirmed.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time!
Damante has completed 62.6% of his passes compared with Hedden’s 52.4%. That gives Sanchez an interesting decision if both are available. Ball security should carry plenty of weight.
Creel offers Jacksonville State the more established dual-threat presence. New Mexico State must contain his scrambling ability without surrendering easy completions.
The Aggies need disciplined coverage and reliable tackling. One missed assignment against Creel can turn a routine play into a major gain.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. New Mexico State Aggies bottom line: Jacksonville State has the more versatile QB, but New Mexico State’s disciplined run defense could force the Gamecocks to earn their points.

Gamecocks Aggies Free Pick: Under 49.5
Here is my Gamecocks Aggies free pick: Under 49.5. Jacksonville State has been winning, but it hasn’t been blowing opponents away. New Mexico State has enough at stake to make this a physical, possession-by-possession fight.
The Aggies have a productive running back in James Jones. Feeding him can shorten the game and keep Jacksonville State’s offense watching from the sideline.
That’s the kind of football I want with an under.
Make both offenses earn their points the hard way, and 49.5 becomes a demanding number.
Jacksonville State doesn’t need a shootout to win this game. The Gamecocks can protect the ball, manage field position and force New Mexico State to string together long drives.
I’m expecting more grinding than fireworks. If these teams trade punts instead of quick scores, I’ll be sitting on the right side of the total.
Under 49.5
