Hawkeyes vs. Golden Gophers Gameday
The No. 15 Iowa Hawkeyes visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1. Iowa enters at 5-1, while Minnesota stands at 4-2.
Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes are undefeated in two road games and have had a bye week to prepare. Both teams are 2-1 in Big Ten play.
That makes Saturday more than another trophy game.
Iowa brings the stronger defense, but Minnesota gets Homecoming and a chance to disrupt its rival’s momentum.
P.J. Fleck’s Gophers are 3-1 at home and looking to recover from their latest defeat. Minnesota will also host its annual Homecoming celebration, giving the rivalry an added edge.
The teams are battling for Floyd of Rosedale, the bronze pig awarded to the winner since 1935. Iowa has dominated recent visits to Minneapolis, but rivalry trophies have a habit of making favorites uncomfortable.
It’s Week 8, Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Odds & Previous Games
Iowa opened at -274 on the moneyline, with Minnesota at +222. The Hawkeyes are favored by seven points, and the opening total is 40.5.
Iowa defeated Washington 41-24, Michigan 20-19, Northern Iowa 55-0 and Iowa State 16-13. Its only loss came against Ohio State, 31-14.
That’s four victories in five outings against a respectable schedule.
Minnesota lost 41-13 to Purdue after beating Michigan 20-14 and Washington 27-24. The Gophers also defeated Akron 41-7 but fell to Mississippi State 38-13.
Iowa has won four of the last five meetings, including 41-3 in 2025 and 31-14 in 2024. Minnesota’s lone victory during that stretch came in 2023, a 12-10 defensive battle.

Golden Gophers Stats
Minnesota has scored 173 points through six games, averaging 28.8 per contest. The Gophers average 236.5 passing yards but only 104.8 rushing yards, leaving their offense heavily dependent on throwing the football. That imbalance has made sustained drives difficult against physical defenses.
TJ Thomas leads the ground game with 317 yards, while Javon Tracy has 32 catches for 375 yards. Tracy gives Minnesota a dependable target when it needs to move the chains.
Getting the running game involved would certainly help.
Defensively, Minnesota has allowed 131 points, averaging 21.8 per game. The Gophers have collected 14 sacks, four interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
Minnesota has enough passing talent to compete, but its struggling ground game makes every third down more difficult.
The Gophers can pressure opposing quarterbacks, although their defense has struggled against stronger offenses. Fleck needs better tackling and fewer missed assignments Saturday.
Hawkeyes Stats
Iowa has scored 186 points through six games, averaging 31 per contest. The Hawkeyes have rushed for 1,164 yards and passed for 1,255. Their offensive balance has improved considerably.
Kamari Moulton has become a major contributor in the backfield, giving Iowa a physical running threat. The offensive line has helped create more consistent opportunities.
That’s a welcome change from the usual Iowa offensive headaches.
Defensively, the Hawkeyes have allowed just 87 points, averaging 14.5 per game. They’ve recorded 19 sacks and four interceptions, continuing Ferentz’s reputation for disciplined defensive football.
Iowa allows only 84.7 rushing yards per contest, ranking among the nation’s toughest teams against the run. Opponents rarely find easy yardage between the tackles.
That defensive strength makes Iowa difficult to chase. Minnesota must avoid falling into predictable passing situations.
Hawkeyes vs. Golden Gophers QB Matchup
Drake Lindsey has thrown for 1,335 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions through six games for Minnesota. He’s averaging 222.5 passing yards per contest, providing most of the Gophers’ offensive production. His accuracy and decision-making will be tested against Iowa’s coverage.
Lindsey has shown he can create scoring opportunities, particularly when Minnesota protects him long enough to work through his reads. However, turnovers remain a concern against aggressive defenses.
Careless throws won’t get much sympathy from the Hawkeyes.
Jeremy Hecklinski will start for Iowa after impressing against Washington. In that victory, he completed 14 of 19 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
Hecklinski has thrown for 410 yards, four touchdowns and one interception this season. His quick decisions have helped Iowa maintain better offensive rhythm.
Hank Brown is healthy following his shoulder injury, but Ferentz has chosen to stay with Hecklinski. Brown previously threw for 832 yards and five touchdowns.

Lindsey needs Minnesota’s offensive line to hold up against Iowa’s pressure. Without a credible rushing threat, the Gophers risk asking their quarterback to make difficult throws on every possession.
Hecklinski faces a Minnesota defense capable of generating sacks and forcing mistakes. Another efficient outing would strengthen his hold on the starting job.
Both quarterbacks have the ability to attack downfield, but protecting the football remains essential. Neither coaching staff wants to give its rival cheap points.
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers bottom line: Iowa’s defensive discipline gives it the advantage, while Minnesota’s passing attack offers the clearest route to challenging the Hawkeyes.
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Betting Trends
- Iowa is 13-0 straight up in their last 13 games as a favorite.
- The Hawkeyes are 6-0 against the spread in their last 6 away games.
- Iowa is 5-0 against the spread in games with totals of 42 or less.
- Also, Minnesota is 10-1 straight up in their last 11 home games.
- Additionally, the Golden Gophers are 4-0 against the spread as underdogs in their last 4 games.
- Minnesota is 3-0 against the spread after a loss in their last 3 games.
Hawkeyes Golden Gophers Free Pick: Over 40.5
Here is my Hawkeyes Golden Gophers free pick: Over 40.5. Iowa’s defensive reputation is keeping this total down, but its offense has become more dangerous. The Hawkeyes don’t need a shootout to help push this past 40.
Minnesota can contribute through the air, and Iowa’s aggressive front creates opportunities for short fields when quarterbacks make mistakes. At this number, one defensive takeaway could be worth more than a dozen pretty drives.
That’s the kind of edge I want on a low total.
Give me an extra possession or two, and 40.5 starts looking awfully manageable.
The key is Iowa building a lead without completely shutting down Minnesota’s scoring chances. That puts the Gophers in catch-up mode and keeps the clock from becoming the under’s best friend.
I’m counting on competitive football, not a track meet. Seven touchdowns aren’t required, and these offenses have enough weapons to clear the number. My money goes on Over 40.5.
