The No. 7 BYU Cougars visit the No. 3 Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff is noon ET on ABC, with the Holy War carrying major Big 12 implications.
BYU enters at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play under Kalani Sitake. The Cougars are 2-1 on the road and coming off a 27-20 victory over Arizona State.
Two Top 10 teams, one bitter rivalry, and a conference title race that suddenly feels personal.
The Cougars have won three consecutive meetings against Utah.
Utah remains unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12. Morgan Scalley’s Utes are 5-0 at home and have been difficult to handle at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The Utes defeated Cincinnati 49-25 last weekend, continuing their perfect start. They’ve also won all three road games.

Utes Stats
Utah has scored 311 points through eight games, averaging nearly 39 per contest. The Utes have rushed for 1,835 yards, giving them one of the nation’s most productive ground attacks.
Wayshawn Parker leads the backfield with 726 rushing yards and nine TD. His physical running style has helped Utah establish control at the line of scrimmage.
Braden Pegan leads the receiving corps with 505 yards, providing a reliable option when opponents concentrate on stopping the run.
Utah’s rushing attack has been punishing, and stopping it takes considerably more than good intentions.
The Utes have allowed 127 points through eight games. Their defense has recorded 17 sacks and nine interceptions, providing dependable support for the offense.
Utah has been particularly effective against the pass, holding opponents to a 50% completion rate. The Utes have also limited opposing rushing attacks to approximately 101 yards per game.
Parker has been dealing with a quadriceps contusion after leaving the Cincinnati game early. His status deserves attention, while Noah Bennee and Daidren Zipperer have also been mentioned among Utah’s injury concerns.
Cougars Stats
BYU has scored 259 points, averaging 32.4 per game. The Cougars have produced 1,780 passing yards and 1,403 rushing yards, giving them a reasonably balanced offense.
LJ Martin has rushed for 344 yards and three TD in four appearances. A severe ankle sprain has sidelined him for four consecutive games, leaving his availability uncertain.
Preston Rex has contributed 223 rushing yards and two TD. BYU has needed additional production from its backfield during Martin’s absence.
The Cougars have allowed 150 points, averaging fewer than 19 per contest. Their defense has recorded 18 sacks and six interceptions, providing reliable support.
BYU has held opponents to approximately 100 rushing yards per game. That front seven faces a demanding assignment against Utah’s physical offensive line.
Martin’s status remains the biggest backfield question. Sione Moa has taken on additional carries, giving BYU another option if its leading back cannot return.
Cougars vs. Utes QB Matchup
Devon Dampier leads Utah with 1,876 passing yards and 18 TD through eight games. He’s attempted 227 passes and thrown seven interceptions.
Dampier also brings considerable mobility, having become Utah’s career rushing leader among quarterbacks. His ability to extend plays makes him dangerous when defenses lose containment.
His passing production has helped Utah maintain offensive balance rather than relying exclusively on its rushing attack.
Bear Bachmeier leads BYU with 1,750 passing yards and 12 TD. He’s thrown four interceptions on 214 attempts through eight games.
Bachmeier has generally protected possession while keeping the Cougars competitive against stronger opponents. His decision-making becomes especially important in a hostile road environment.
Dampier has the greater TD production, while Bachmeier has committed fewer interceptions. Both quarterbacks must handle the pressure of a rivalry with serious conference implications.

Utah can use Dampier’s mobility to challenge BYU’s defensive assignments. The Cougars must maintain containment without allowing easy completions underneath.
Bachmeier faces a defense capable of disguising coverage and creating difficult throwing windows. He’ll need to recognize those looks quickly rather than forcing passes into traffic.
BYU Cougars vs. Utah Utes bottom line: Utah brings greater offensive production and home-field advantage, but BYU has the personnel and recent rivalry success to challenge the unbeaten Utes.

Cougars Utes Free Pick: Under 48.5
Here is my Cougars Utes free pick: I’m betting Under 48.5. The Holy War has plenty riding on it, and I’m expecting both coaching staffs to value field position over unnecessary risks. Nobody wants to be the guy who hands his rival seven cheap points.
BYU has already won games this season by keeping the score manageable, while Utah has the defensive personnel to make opponents work through long possessions. That gives me a better reason to trust the Under than simply hoping these offenses have an off day.
I’ll take disciplined football and a few punts over two coaches trying to win a rivalry game with trick plays.
My biggest concern is Utah jumping ahead early and forcing BYU to abandon its preferred pace. Otherwise, I see enough reason for both teams to stay patient, run the football and make their opponent earn every scoring opportunity.
At 48.5, a game finishing somewhere around 24-20 gets the job done. I’m not asking either defense for a shutout, and that’s precisely why I like this number.
This rivalry can get nasty without turning into a track meet. I’ll trust the defenses, take the slower possessions and play Under 48.5.
