Nevada has defended the pass better than the run. Opponents average 162 rushing yards per game, a concerning weakness against New Mexico.
Ball security hasn’t helped, either.
The Wolf Pack have thrown 12 interceptions, repeatedly putting their defense in difficult situations.
DJ Asiasi is out for the season, while Carter Jones remains an injury concern.

Lobos vs. Wolf Pack QB Matchup
New Mexico quarterback Toa Fa’avae has thrown for 891 yards, six TDs and seven interceptions. He’s completed 58 of 101 passes in eight games.
Fa’avae also contributes as a runner, giving New Mexico another option on designed keepers and broken plays.
Against San Jose State, Fa’avae completed nine of 14 passes for 101 yards and a TD. He also threw three interceptions.
Luke Moga provides depth behind Fa’avae.
Moga has completed 23 of 38 passes for 248 yards and three TDs without an interception.
Nevada’s quarterback situation is less settled. Carter Jones has thrown for 654 yards, three TDs and two interceptions, but his availability remains uncertain.
AJ Bianco has attempted 71 passes for 397 yards, two TDs and three interceptions. He’s handled significant work recently, including against UCLA.

Luke Duncan has also seen action, throwing for 265 yards, two TDs and five interceptions. Three came against UCLA.
Nevada needs someone to establish control and avoid obvious passing situations against an aggressive defense.
Fa’avae benefits from an established system, while Nevada continues searching for stability. Neither quarterback situation is flawless, but New Mexico has managed its mistakes better.
New Mexico Lobos vs. Nevada Wolf Pack bottom line: The Lobos bring the stronger ground game and defense into a matchup where Nevada cannot afford another sloppy offensive performance.
New Mexico Lobos vs. Nevada Wolf Pack Football Betting Trends

- Plus, New Mexico is 11-1 straight up in their last 12 games after a win.
- New Mexico is 10-3 against the spread in their last 13 games overall.
- Nevada is 3-0 against the spread in their last 3 games after a loss.
- Additionally, Nevada is 3-1 against the spread in their last 4 home games.
- Nevada is 6-3 on the over/under in their last 9 games as an underdog.
Lobos Wolf Pack Free Pick: New Mexico -9.5
Here is my Lobos Wolf Pack free pick: I’m backing New Mexico -9.5. The Lobos have won 13 straight as favorites and 11 of their last 12 following a victory. That’s a team that knows how to handle games it’s supposed to win.
New Mexico has also covered 10 of its last 13 games. Nevada has shown some fight after losses, but covering against this opponent requires considerably more than a decent first half.
Nevada can hang around for a while, but hanging around doesn’t pay when you’re catching 9.5.
The Lobos can build their margin without depending on explosive passing plays. Sustained drives and short fields should give them enough opportunities to separate, particularly if Nevada struggles to answer once it falls behind.
My concern is a late Wolf Pack touchdown turning a comfortable lead into a bad beat. That’s always possible with a spread near double digits.
Still, I’m not passing on the stronger team because of what might happen in garbage time. Nevada needs four good quarters to spoil this play, and I don’t see it delivering them. Lay the 9.5 with New Mexico -9.5.
