2017 Florida State Seminoles Predictions: Team Strengths
Deondre Francois for the Heisman?: Redshirt freshman Deondre Francois won the starting job last year and had a pretty good season in a tough conference.
He threw for 20 touchdowns and had just 7 interceptions as the Seminoles relied heavily on superstar Dalvin Cook to lead the offense. The reigning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year for 2016, also ran for 526 yards before net losses due to sacks. His athleticism will be tough for defenses to gameplan against in the conference.
A 30 touchdown season could be in the works for the talented QB and he may top 3500 yards through the air.
Can the D-line get 50 sacks again?: Florida State had one of the top defensive lines in the country last season, racking up 51 sacks. They received main contributions from underclass including Brian Burns, who had 9.5 as a backup. Outside of Burns the defensive line also boasts tackle Derrick Nnadi, a former top 25 recruit as well.
Coach Fisher is one of the best recruiters in America and they bolstered the D-line with another great class. They signed the #1, #5, and #12 ranked defensive lineman in the country. I expect them to be a force in the race for the College Football Playoff.
How dominant can this secondary be?: The Seminoles always reload the secondary, as there have been a number of great DB’s and safeties to put on a uniform. This year they get star safety Derwin James back, and also boast 1st Team All-American Tarvarus McFadden to shut down the opposing teams best wideouts.
Having these two leaders in the back half of the defense will be key in a conference with underrated quarterback play. Along with these two All conference candidates the secondary has former top 5 wide receiver recruit Ermon Lane who was 9th on the team in tackles last season.
I believe this could be the best secondary in the country when it’s all said and done.
2017 Florida State Seminoles Predictions: Team Weaknesses
The kicking game may be their downfall: The special teams unit may be the only part of this team with a flaw, and even that is kind of a stretch. Last year true freshman Ricky Aguayo finished the year 19-27, and the Noles also started a true freshman punter in Logan Tyler. If the kicking game can improve into a top 30 unit, which is indeed possible given the talent and coaching schemes of the staff, it will be tough to beat FSU at all.
Florida State Seminoles Prediction: 11-1
Florida State will lose the first game of the season against the Crimson Tide, which should be the best non conference matchup of the entire season, but I see them avenging last year’s loss to Louisville and racking up 12 (ACC title game included) straight to get into the College Football Playoff.
