When it looked as if the Giants were separating themselves from the NL West and potentially the entire NL, the All-Star break came and now the Giants have been horrendous since.
They opened the break by getting swept by the Padres and have since totaled just three wins.
The Nationals have really started to separate themselves from the NL East and now after adding closer Mark Melancon are hoping to separate themselves from the rest of the MLB.
By doing so, they have strengthened one of the few weaknesses of a very well rounded team. This matchup could very well be a playoff matchup this fall – that is if the Giants find the rhythm that they were in prior to the All-Star break.
The Nationals will send out Gio Gonzalez for the finale of this four game set in the midst of their nine game road trip. While Gonzalez has been off his career trajectory thus far this season, he has been sharp lately.
He is 2-1 in his last four starts giving up just eight runs over 24 innings.
As a left-hander, Gio’s platoon advantage could be minimized though as the Giants lead the MLB in at bats against left handed pitchers.
While 2015 MVP Bryce Harper’s struggles have continued – he is batting .174 in July and hasn’t had a multi-hit game since July 7th, the Nationals may have the 2016 MVP in Daniel Murphy.
Murphy leads the NL in hitting with Washington catcher Wilson Ramos second in the NL. They both sat out Saturday but the Nats’ lineup has more to it than just them.
Rookie phenom Trea Turner has impressed while Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa have found their power strokes.
The Nats lineup should give Matt Cain all sorts of issues.
San Francisco Giants
It is difficult to imagine how a team equipped with Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto could go on such a stretch that the Giants have been on. But the Giants’ bats have gone completely silent.
The Giants have scored just 46 runs in 14 games since the All-Star break.
They’ll be up against Gonzalez who has not been an ace caliber pitcher like earlier in his career, but has been sharp lately.
With Matt Cain on the mound, the Giants are going to have to score a bunch of runs to have a shot.
Cain is 2-6 this season with 5.95 ERA. He got a win his last time out against the Reds but wasn’t sharp – yielding 4 runs on 6 hits over 5.1 innings.
Cain’s struggles likely will continue against one of the most fear inducing lineups in the National League.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Over is 7-3 in WAS last 10 Sunday games
- WAS are 7-3 in their last 10 Sunday games
- SF are 3-11 in their last 14 overall
- The Giants bullpen has a 4.36 ERA at home this season
Free Washington Nationals vs San Francisco Giants MLB Prediction:
The Giants offense struggles were relieved just a bit on Saturday as they picked up a 5-3 victory over the Nats.
I don’t see Matt Cain being the guy to continue the effort of re-righting the ship though despite having pitched for one of the wins on thus horrid 3-11 stretch.
Going up against the 4th best offense in the NL won’t help much either.
Whether or not Harper breaks out of his slump won’t determine the result of this game as the Nationals are well built around the slugger.
The strength of the Nats offense will prevent the Giants from breaking out of their slump.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Washington ML and Game total Over 8.5
The Nationals should take another one from the Giants on Sunday afternoon in San Francisco even if it takes a bunch of runs to do so. Gio has been sharp lately but still sports a 4.44 ERA on the season. I like the Nationals in this one and the over as the Giants start to get their bats going a little bit.
MLB Free Score Prediction: Nationals 9-5
