Padres 2016 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2016 San Diego Padres predictions? After making some big moves last year, the San Diego Padres were a sexy pick to make some noise and compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. That didn’t come to fruition as the Padres fired Bud Black in the middle of the season and they ended up with a disappointing 74-88 record.
MLB Padres Predictions & Handicapping Insight
2016 MLB Team Previews – San Diego Padres
- National League West +2000
- National League +8000
- World Series +12500
- Alexei Ramirez
- Jon Jay
- Fernando Rodney
The Padres didn’t do much to improve offensively, in fact, they regressed, but they improved on the defensive end. Alexei Ramirez is the shortstop they needed last year and Jon Jay is an upgrade defensively as he can get to ball Justin Upton couldn’t.
- Craig Kimbrel
- Justin Upton
- Yonder Alonso
The Padres lost that big bat that Justin Upton provided along with Yonder Alonso who provided a little pop. Plus, they lost one of the best closers in the game, but they got Fernando Rodney and they are obviously hoping he has a rebound season.
Padres Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- 2B Cody Spangenberg
- 3B Yangervis Solarte
- 1B Will Myers
- RF Matt Kemp
- C Derek Norris
- SS Alexei Ramirez
- LF Jon Jay
- CF Melvin Upton Jr.
All in all, this is a solid lineup. That middle of the order is pretty nice with Will Myers, Matt Kemp, and Derek Norris. The problem is basically around those three. Cody Spangenberg is projected to be the leadoff hitter which isn’t that great.
Spangenberg doesn’t get on base at a high clip and he isn’t a speed demon.
Yangervis Solarte and Alexei Ramirez are okay hitters, they’ll hover around the .265 region and pop off a some home runs in the teens, but not nearly enough to where you have to fear those hitters.
Same with Jon Jay, solid hitter, but nothing special and Melvin Upton Jr. is terrible.
Padres Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- RH Tyson Ross
- RH James Shields
- RH Andrew Cashner
- LH Robbie Erlin
- RH Colin Rea
Tyson Ross is scheduled to start opening day for the San Diego Padres and I think he has the potential to have a breakout year. Ross has been a high quality pitcher for the last couple of years, but I think he’s ready to compete for the NL Cy Young this year.
Ross is hitting his prime and he is only getting better. If you want a dark horse for the NL Cy Young award, I’d throw a couple of bucks on Ross who you can get really long odds on.
James Shields and Andrew Cashner round out the top half of the rotation and you really couldn’t ask for a better top three.
The Padres possess one of the best 1-2-3 punches in baseball. The bottom of the rotation needs help and that may end up preventing them from really truly competing in the NL West.
Robbie Erlin, Colin Rea, Brandon Maurer, Carlos Villanueva someone is going to have to step up.
Padres Predictions: Projected Closer:
- RH Fernando Rodney
For the last number of years the Padres have possessed one of the better bullpens. Not last year. The Padres struggled and they’ll look to bounce back next year.
Fernando Rodney will look to close things out in the ninth, but he’ll have some competition from Drew Pomeranz, and Kevin Quackenbush. The Padres have some talent in the ‘pen and it should bounce back a little bit and they should have an above average bullpen.
2016 San Diego Padres Prediction:
You can get some really juicy odds on the San Diego Padres winning the NL West. I’ve seen 15/1 to 25/1, so I’d say you can throw a couple of bucks on them as your best bet. The Padres have a decent lineup, a decent bullpen, and a top-heavy starting rotation.
That is a recipe to, at the very least, compete for a division title in a very winnable division.
If you want a more winnable prop bet to take, I’d recommend taking the over on whatever win total a book is offering. I believe the Padres may very well have a winning season, or at least come close to it.
The books are giving the Padres around 73, 74 wins and I think the Padres are closer to 80, 81, 82.
