Breeders’ Cup 2016 Saturday Handicapping
Odds: Bovada
Looking for 2016 Breeders Cup Free Picks? The horse racing world will be tuned into Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California this weekend when the annual Breeders’ Cup weekend takes place.
Saturday if the bigger of the days – nine Grade 1 races will be contested – the BC Juvenile Fillies, the BC Filly and Mare Turf, the BC Sprint, the BC Turf Sprint, the BC Juvenile, the BC Turf, the BC Filly and Mare Sprint, the BC Mile and the BC Classic will all be run on arguably the biggest racing card anywhere in the world this year.
The G1 14 Breeders’ Cup Hands Winery
The G1 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies kicks off the festivities on Saturday – two year old fillies will take to Santa Anita’s dirt track and race 1 1/16 miles searching for the winner’s share of the $2 million purse.
A quality group of 12 have been assembled with no real clear-cut, obvious favorite.

I like 6-1 third choice Sweet Loretta – the Todd Pletcher trained filly has won all three career starts including two graded stakes with 8-1 shot Yellow Agate getting in for second. 5-1 second choice Valadorna is my pick for third place in the race.
If you are looking for some value – 12-1 shot Dancing Rags is the name I am looking at. She is undefeated in her two career starts and enters off a good win in the G1 Darley Alcibiades.
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf is next up on the schedule. A purse of $2 million will be on the line for fillies and mares three years old and upward willing to go 1 1/4 miles on Santa Anita’s turf track. A large field of 13 have been confirmed.
This is a race that European invaders have traditionally done well but I like a North American product to succeed this week.
5-2 favorite Lady Eli has seven wins and a second in eight career starts – impressive. I like her to best some quality Europeans including 8-1 shot Sea Calisi who I like to finish second and Irish bred Seventh Heaven who claims third.
A nice sleeper in this race is Al’s Gal at 15-1 odds. She has been in every race this year and enters off a graded stakes win.
The G1 Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Sprint
The G1 Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Sprint will feature horses three years old and upward as they dash six furlongs for the winner’s portion of the $1.5 million purse.
A field of nine will give it a go. The pick here is 5-2 second choice Lord Nelson. He enters on a terrific four race win streak – three on this track and looks like the class of this field.

Another Hot horse – 4-1 fourth choice – A. P. Indian is my choice for second – he has won six straight races ahead of this weekend.
A pair of 15-1 shots should have some success here too – I like Noholdingbackbear to claim third with Joking who has been in the mix every time out this year to get fourth.
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint will have a group of horses three years old and upward willing to take to Santa Anita’s downhill turf track and race about 6 1/2 furlongs for the winner’s share of the $1 million purse. A full field of 14 plus two Alternate Entries have been confirmed.
I’m rolling with 8-1 third choice Celestine to emerge here with tepid 5-1 favorite Pure Sensation getting in for second and French Invader Suedois claiming third. I also like 10-1 shot Ambitious Brew, off a graded stakes win to make some noise. This may be the most wide-open race of the weekend with any one of six or seven entries able to emerge.
The G1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
The G1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is next up as two year old colts and geldings will take to Santa Anita’s dirt track and race 1 1/16 miles for the winner’s share of the $2 million purse. 11 of the best juvenile in the world have been confirmed. 4-1 second choice Classic Empire looks like the class of the field here – he would be undefeated in his four starts if not for unseating his rider two starts back.
I like 5-1 third choice Gormley to get second with Syndergaard claiming third at 6-1 odds. I think 12-1 shot Theory races well here and challenges for a show spot as well.
The G1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf
The G1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf will featured a group of 13 horses three years old and upward when they take to Santa Anita’s turf track and race 1 1/2 miles for the winner’s share of the $4 million purse. The defending champion in this race is 3-1 second choice Found who returns from Europe in very good form.
I like him to repeat with co-second choice and another European Invader Highland Reel getting in for second. Yet another European – 12-1 shot Ulysses is my pick for the show spot with Ashleyluvssugar my pick for the potential upset at 15-1 odds.
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint will have fillies and mares three years old and upward take to Santa Anita’s dirt track and race seven furlongs for the winner’s share of the $1 million purse. 13 older females have been confirmed.
This looks like the favorite’s race to lose – Haveyougoneaway at 3-1 has won three straight ahead of this weekend and has been first or second in eight of her last nine starts. 7-2 second choice Carina Mia is my pick for second with 10-1 Irish Jasper getting third and Tara’s Tango claiming fourth.
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile should be interesting to say the least. A purse of $2 million will be up for grabs for horses three years old and upward willing to go on mile on Santa Anita’s turf track. A full field of 14 will line up. It is pretty hard to go against the 3-1 favorite Tepin in this one – she hasn’t been worse than second in her last 14 starts with 11 wins over that span.
Irish bred second betting choice Limato has been impressive and is my pick to finish second with interesting 12-1 shot Midnight Storm claiming the show spot. 8-1 shot Ironicus looms and could easily sneak into the top 3.
Breeders’ Cup Classic
The biggest race of the weekend – the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic anchors the crazy Saturday card. Some of the best horses three years old and upward have been assembled to go 1 1/4 miles on Santa Anita’s dirt track as they chase the winner’s share of the very nice $6 million purse.

10 horses will compete – nine of which will likely be chasing the even money favorite California Chrome – arguably the most dominant horse on the planet right now.
Impressive Bob Baffert trained colt and 5-2 second betting choice Arrogate should be good for second here with 5-1 third choice Frosted getting third – no big surprises here!
Hoppertunity at 15-1 offers decent value off a great win in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at Belmont Park October 8 and Shaman Ghost at 20-1 could be a factor as well off a win in the G1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga September 3.
Good luck and enjoy what promises to be a sensational day of racing!
