2015 Breeders’ Cup Betting Preview
The horse racing world will be focused on Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky this weekend when the 2015 Breeders’ Cup is contested. Some of the world’s best have gathered to take on one of the 13 lucrative Grade 1 stakes races- none with a purse less than $1 million. It all starts Friday and culminates with the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday night when American Pharoah looks to bounce back after his first loss in an eternity.
Here is a quick look into all races on the stacked schedule and what should take place.
Friday Races
Race 6 Juvenile Turf -1 mile on the turf for two-year-olds with a post time of 3:30PM EST.
The favorite is Cymric at 7-2 odds – she is Europe’s best entry in an event that they have dominated. Second choice Airoforce at 4-1 is the pick here. He has two dominant wins so far – the last one coming on this track. If you are looking for a sleeper there’s 12-1 shot Camelot Kitten who finished almost caught Airoforce last time out on this track but settled for second.
Race 7 Las Vegas Dirt Mile -1 mile on the dirt for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 4:10PM EST.
Liam’s Map is the overwhelming even money favorite in this race – no reason to look further. He hasn’t been worse than second in seven career starts – five wins – the last one being the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes September 5. Red Vine at 6-1 is intriguing but Liam’s Map should run away with this one.
Race 8 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf -1 mile on the turf for two-year-old fillies with a post
time of 4:50PM EST.
Harmonize at 7-2 is the favorite in a wide open field. She has two wins and a second place finish in three starts. Europeans have traditionally done well in this event – 9-2 second choice Illuminate is an interesting entry but I like 5-1 third choice Catch a Glimpse to show up in this one.
Race 9 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – one and an eight miles on the dirt for three-year-old and upward fillies and mares with a post time of 5:35PM EST.

Wedding Toast is the favorite here at 4-1 – she has eight wins in 12 career starts but finished fourth in her only start on this track. 9-2 second choice Sheer Drama is the pick here. She enters on a two race Grade 1 winning streak and looks poised to win this one. Untapable spiked a fever and withdrew – too bad – she would have made things interesting.
Saturday races:
Race 3 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies –one and one sixteenth mile on the dirt for two-year-old fillies with a post time of 12:05PM EST.
Songbird at 7-5 is the morning line favorite after three starts and three wins – two Grade 1 stakes. If she doesn’t win have a look at Nickname at 4-1. She’s enters off a nice win in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and has steadily improved every time out.
Race 4 Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint -5½ furlongs on the turf for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 12:45PM EST.
The favorite Lady Shipman at 5-2 has yet to race in graded stakes competition. Second choice Undrafted is intriguing but has won just one of his last three starts. Take a look at 10-1 shot Ready for Rye – he has won three straight races ahead of this weekend.
Race 5 Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint -7 furlongs on the dirt for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 1:25PM EST.
The morning line favorite is Cavorting at 3-1 – she’s been on fire but drew an unfortunate outside post 14 in the race. Take a look at 6-1 shot La Verdad – she enters on a six race win streak – she hasn’t been touched in a while. Defending champion Judy the Beauty also looms at 6-1 odds.
Race 6 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf – one and three sixteenth miles on the turf for three-year-old and upward fillies and mares with a post time of 2:10PM EST.
Europeans traditionally do well here – Irish bred Legatissimo is favored at 8-5 odds. She has finished no worse than second in her last six starts overall with four wins. Photo call at 12-1 is the next hottest entry in the field and 6-1 shot Miss France is due after four straight second place finishes against France’s best.
Race 7 Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Sprint – six furlongs on the dirt for three-year-olds with a post time of 2:50PM EST.
The favorite Private Zone at 5-2 odds has five wins in his last eight starts and is coming off two straight wins – the Grade 1 Forego Stakes and the Grade 3 Belmont Sprint Championship. He finished third in this race last year and would love to improve on that this year. Impressive Runhappy at 3-1 odds has won five of six career starts – four straight ahead of this weekend. He’s the pick. 10-1 shot Wild Dude is an intriguing entry – he enters off a win at the Grade 1 Santa Anita Turf Championships and has been in every race the last year.
Race 8 Breeders’ Cup Mile – one mile on the turf for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 3:30PM EST.
There is a good chance that a European entry will win this race. 3-1 favorite Make Believe comes from Britain, second choice 7-2 Esoterique is from Ireland and the next two betting favorites are from overseas. Defending champion 12-1 Kakonite hasn’t looked great lately but looks like good value. This still looks like Make Believe’s race to win – he has won three straight and is the hottest entry in the field.
Race 9 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – one and one sixteenth miles on the dirt for two-year-old Colts and Geldings with a post time of 4:10PM EST.
7-2 favorite won the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity on this track October 3 and hopes to hold off a pair of undefeated entries. 9-2 third choice Nyquist hasn’t been touched in four career starts and 15-1 outsider is also undefeated in his career. Nyquist is the pick here – two straight Grade 1 wins ahead of this weekend.
Race 10 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – one and one half miles on the turf for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 4:50PM EST.
No reason to look further than 4-5 favorite Golden Horn – eight race career – seven wins and a second place finish. 8-1 second choice Big Blue Kitten has won four Grade 1 races – two of those coming in his last three starts. He’s hot right now but not of the class of the fave. 15-1 shot The Pizza Man looms as an intriguing longshot – three wins and a second place finish in his last four starts and a second last time out.
Race 11 Breeders’ Cup Classic – one and one fourth miles on the dirt for three-year-olds and upward with a post time of 5:35PM EST.
This race is all about American Pharoah 6-5 favorite who looks for the North American Grand Slam. He finished second (shockingly) last time out and will be out to avenge that loss. 2012 Eclipse Award winner as 2-year-old filly, 2013 Champion 3 Year Old Filly and nine time Grade 1 victor Beholder looms at 5-2 odds. Six straight wins has her bas a serious threat to the boys in this race. It should be a dandy but my heart and head say Pharoah takes it. Keen Ice – the horse that beat American Pharoah last time out is at 12-1 – he is an intriguing underdog.
