As always, our rankings will look at the entire body of work for all 30 teams, with a specific emphasis on recent trends.
1. Houston Rockets
Although it’s tough to picture the Houston Rockets eliminating the Golden State Warriors in a playoff series, it’s also impossible not to give them the top spot in these rankings. It will be even more impossible (is that possible?) if they can put together another strong month considering they play 13 of 14 games against teams over .500.

Will the Rockets end the season with the top spot in our rankings? We’ve got six more weeks until we know the answer.
2. Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have struggled with the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, which is something to keep an eye on entering Saturday’s game.
Outside of OKC, Golden State has looked like its usual self. A bit careless with the ball, a bit bored on occasion, but with no reason to doubt their legitimacy as the overall best team in the league on paper.
3. Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors endured a close loss on Friday night to the Milwaukee Bucks, but that’s no reason to drop them outside of the top three.

They’re the only team in the league with a top-four offensive and defensive rating, and without question, they’ve been the best overall team in the Eastern Conference since Boston started coming down to earth.
4. Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz finally lost. It took them 11 outings, but they dropped a game on Friday night to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Utah’s playoff hopes are far from dead, but a loss to one of the teams they’re competing with for a final postseason spot certainly doesn’t help.
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves look like a near lock for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, assuming Jimmy Butler’s injury isn’t serious. He went down on Friday night against Houston with an apparent non-contact leg injury, although the initial X-rays were negative.
An MRI is scheduled in the coming days, so keep an eye on his status.
6. Philadelphia 76ers
Fun fact: The Philadelphia 76ers have yet to lose a game at home since the calendar turned from 2017.
Another fun fact: They’re on a six-game winning streak—their most recent victory coming in clutch fashion over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday—which is the longest in the league behind only the No. 1 team out West, the Rockets.
7. Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics needed the All-Star break as much as just about any other team in the league. You could make the argument that they don’t belong this high, but we’re still considering the entire body of work and overall potential in this process.
8. Washington Wizards
The John Wall-less Washington Wizards continue to surprise. They endured a bad loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night, but on Thursday they took down the new-look Cleveland Cavaliers on national television in their first game back from the All-Star break.
9. Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers have quietly gotten hot. They’ve won four out of their last five, with the most recent two victories coming against the Golden State Warriors and the red-hot Utah Jazz, breaking the latter’s 11-game winning streak.

Note that Portland’s only loss during that stretch is to that same red-hot Jazz team.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers had themselves a heck of a trade deadline. How much better they got is still up for debate, but they got younger, more athletic and they cleaned house in a locker room that seriously needed a fresh start.
