The third ranked team in the Atlantic Division, the Boston Bruins, face off in a best of seven series against the second ranked team in the Atlantic, the Ottawa Senators.
This should shape up to be a good series, after a season that finished with the two teams separated by just three points.
Boston went 0-3-1 against the Ottawa Senators, grabbing just one point all season from its Atlantic Division opponent. Ottawa outscored Boston 12-7 in the season series, winning a very close game in a shootout back on April 6th.
Boston was able to get things together in the second half of the year, turning around a season that saw the Bruins go 26-23-6 under coach Claude Julien and many were wondering if the team would even see the playoffs.
After letting go of Julien and promoting Bruce Cassidy, the Bruins finished the year 18-8-1 and grabbed 95 points and the 3rd spot in the Atlantic Division.
All sides of the team looked rejuvenated under Cassidy, including the goaltending. Starter Tuukka Rask finished the season with a 37-20-5 record, posting a 2.23 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.
He went 4-0-1 in his final five starts, giving up just four total goals and recording two shutouts.
Offensively, the Bruins will have Brad Marchand back, who missed out on an opportunity to score his 40th goal of the year after being suspended for the final two games for a dirty hit.
He finished the year with 39 goals and 46 assists.
Marchand and David Pastrnak have been the top offensive players for Boston this season. Pastrnak was great, finishing with 34 goals and 36 assists.
Grabbing 98 points, just three more than the Boston Bruins, the Ottawa Senators got that 2nd spot in the Atlantic Division and will have home ice advantage against Boston.
Ottawa finished with a 44-28-10 record and, frankly, thrived in a weak division.
The Senators will be the underdogs in this series, partly because the team is one of the weaker offensive teams in the NHL. Ottawa finished 22nd in the league in goal-scoring, averaging just 2.59 goals per game, under the league average.
The roster has only three 20-goal scorers this season, and only five with 15 or more. A lot of the offense will fall on Mark Stone, Kyle Turris, and Mike Hoffman, the three 20-goal scorers.
Stone finished with 22 goals and 34 assists, while Turris tallied 27 and 28.
Hoffman was great all year, finishing with 26 goals and 35 assists.
It doesn’t look like the Senators will have to worry about missing a key player and captain in Erik Karlsson. He missed the final three games due to a heel stinger but should be ready to go for game one.
Free Boston Bruins vs. Ottawa Senators Playoff Series Prediction:
The Bruins are a different team under Bruce Cassidy and it’s the reason they are in the playoffs right now. Even though the Senators finished ahead of Boston, Boston is the better team in this series.
With players like Pastrnak, Marchand, and Tuukka Rask on the ice, I like the Bruins to easily win this series.
Boston wins the series in five games.
