Last season, Ryan Tannehill won the award for leading the Titans to the playoffs the season after losing his job with the Miami Dolphins. His season may not have had so much to do with perseverance as it did simply finding himself with an opportunity to play for a better team.
Regardless, future odds for the 2020 winner are live on Betonline.
2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds: Ben Roethlisberger +225
Ben Roethlisberger is the favorite on the board at +250. He played in Weeks 1 and 2 last season, lost both games and didn’t throw a single touchdown pass before having season-ending elbow surgery.
This will be the first season of the two-year extension worth $68 million he signed with the Steelers prior to last season.
He’ll certainly come into this season healthy after the surgery and will re-enter a familiar situation playing for the same franchise he has played his entire career for and for a head coach he has played for nearly as long.
The Steelers expect to be contenders and still offer Roethlisberger a compliment of players at the skill position to work with. If he comes anywhere close to returning to his previous standard of play, he’s a strong candidate at the least.
There’s also his image to consider. Roethlisberger’s off-the-field record in the beginning and middle of last decade is atrocious but enough time has passed that much of the public has either forgotten or simply isn’t old enough to remember the motorcycle accident and multiple sexual assault allegations.
That same public may look at one of the NFL’s biggest stars in a different way with a squeaky clean Comeback Player award to his name and that benefits the NFL itself.
2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds: Rob Gronkowski +500
Rob Gronkowski is next on the board at +400. He retired after the 2018 season and didn’t play a game last season. He came out of retirement this offseason to reunite with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay.
Gronk has already won one Comeback Player of the Year in 2014 and would join Chad Pennington (who won twice in three seasons) as at the only player in NFL history to win two outright (Garrison Hearst split one of his two with Jim Harbaugh in 1995).
He’s still only 31 and reportedly healthy after a full season off. But did he keep himself in shape? His name in this particular future market offers yet another way to buy into the Buccaneer hype.
2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds: JJ Watt +400
JJ Watt comes next at +500, rounding out the first three three hugely popular names on the board. He only played in eight games last season after a third season-ending injury in the last four years.
Does he still have the burst? In those eight games last season, he only recorded four sacks. The NFL would certainly love to give one of its most popular players this award but he’s probably going to have to have a big season to earn it.
