Some History
Just a quick scan of where the votes have gone of late can be instrumental in sifting through the incoming rookie class.
At least in this century, the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year has almost always been either a quarterback or a running back. Odell Beckham Jr won as a wide receiver in 2014 and Anquan Boldin won in 2003.
A quarterback has the obvious opportunity to shine and, like a running back, can be the product of a good team around him. Wide receivers must win one-on-one battles against bigger, stronger and more seasoned pros and begin their careers with minimal connections to their new quarterbacks.
The Quarterbacks
So let’s start with the quarterbacks. Last season, Kyler Murray won the award not because he led the Cardinals to the playoffs or even anything close to a winning record.
But Murray started from the get-go and didn’t get crushed. He actually showed some improvement along the way and finished with some impressive counting statistics, aided in large part because he can run.
2020 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – Joe Burrow
Like Murray, Joe Burrow was the first pick in the 2020 draft and will come in as the favorite on the board. He will also likely begin the season as Cincinnati’s starting quarterback (though Andy Dalton’s future is worth keeping an eye on) with some weapons around him.
The Bengals have some receivers who can make plays and a talented running back in Joe Mixon. What they do not have is a fortified offensive line and without at least a serviceable offensive line, a rookie quarterback will get eaten up.
The state of Andy Dalton and Cincinnati’s offensive line are the two stories to watch regarding Burrow’s prospects in the market, leading into training camp.
2020 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa fifth overall despite some worries about his long-term health.
He, more than Burrow and the next guy mentioned, has the strongest running ability but has to beat out both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen for the starting job.
2020 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – Justin Herbert
Justin Herbert is the only other quarterback worth looking at. He went sixth overall and comes into his rookie season bigger, older and stronger than Burrow but may be less likely to start in Week 1.
It’s still so early to speculate but the Chargers have established Tyrod Taylor at the top of the depth chart. Herbert, who played for three different head coaches in four seasons at Oregon, will have to beat out the veteran to start for a team in Los Angeles that has some talent on both sides of the ball.
2020 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Clyde Edwards-Helaire gets the dream opportunity to start his career with the Chiefs. He was the only running back selected in the first round.
The Buffalo Bills have Devin Singletary on board but still spent a third round pick on Utah running back Zack Moss.
2020 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – D’Andre Swift
With Kerryon Johnson still with rehab ahead of him after his season-ending injury in 2019, D’Andre Swift of Detroit has picked up steam in the markets. The 35th overall pick out of Georgia may get the chance to carry the ball often for an offense in Detroit committed to running the ball.
The first wide receiver off the board was Henry Ruggs III to Las Vegas by way of Alabama.
The Denver Broncos selected a wide receiver in each of the first two rounds with Jerry Jeudy out of Alabama in the first and KJ Hamler out of Penn State in the second.
Khalil Mack, the winner before Donald’s back-to-back run is the only other name ahead of last year’s winner Gilmore on the board at Betonline.

2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Odds – FREE PICK: Justin Herbert +1400 (Bet Now at any of our reviewed NFL Sportsbooks!)
Burrow and Tua were the dominant QB names going into the draft and even now after it most of the talk is about those two starting.
Herbert is flying under the radar. He didn’t play in the SEC; he’s been drafted by a low-profile franchise out West; and he has already been named number two on the depth chart.
But because of his size, athleticism and skill set to go along with a team around him that has an excellent chance to win with him, Herbert is a buy at +1400 in the early-season market.
