With the draft behind us now, we have a good indication of what rosters will look like heading into free agency, and which teams have the budget to make a big splash by landing a notable available player or two.
Here’s a look at 10 teams worthy of closer consideration when putting money down on NHL futures.
Let’s break it down.
2019 Stanley Cup Futures Betting Odds
Tampa Bay Lightning +900
Steve Yzerman has built a real juggernaut of a roster in Tampa, but one that just hasn’t been able to break through come the end of the season. As the young pieces on this roster continue to develop, there’s no reason to believe the Lightning won’t be right in the thick of things come the end of May once again.
Nashville Predators +900
If the Lightning were the favorite in the East entering the playoffs, then the Predators were the favorite in the West.

They continue to knock on the door of the franchise’s first Stanley Cup, pushing their chips to the middle of the table by acquiring Kyle Turris midseason a year ago. They’re the favorite to escape the West for the second time in three years entering this season.
Toronto Maple Leafs +1000
The Maple Leafs’ young core is going to break through for a long playoff run at some point, but for now, they’re 0-2 in two postseason series. A year ago they brought Patrick Marleau into the fold to add some playoff experience to a young locker room. What they do on July 1 will determine how much attention needs to be paid to the team this season, but for now, they’re overpriced.
Winnipeg Jets +1000
The Jets were right on the brink of their first Stanley Cup Final appearance before running into the buzzsaw that was Vegas.

This team has a lot of talent and is trending in the right direction.
Vegas Golden Knights +1100
What an inaugural year it was for the Golden Knights, who shocked the hockey world by winning the West playing for a Stanley Cup in their first season. If they can make a big splash this offseason (possibly adding Erik Karlsson?) they could be right back in the thick of it. But as things stand, there’s no value in this team at the moment.
Washington Capitals+1200
The Capitals kind of flew under the radar this season after some disappointing finishes as favorites to win the Cup. They won’t be catching anyone off guard this season.
Pittsburgh Penguins +1200
Three straight Stanley Cups would have been quite the feat for this Penguins core. Now it sounds like there’s some turmoil in the locker room that could force Phil Kessel out. It was good while it lasted.
Edmonton Oilers +2500
Having the best player in hockey on its roster makes Edmonton a team to look out for every year. The front office needs to add some pieces around its star center, and Evan Bouchard is a good start. It’s about time they loosened the purse strings and made a run at their first Cup since Mark Messier was captain.
Chicago Blackhawks +3000
It’s tough to imagine this Blackhawks core that was so good for so long could fall from grace so quickly. Call it a gut feeling, but these lads must have at least one more good run in them.
Montreal Canadiens +6600
While the front office does all it can to mess the roster up, the Canadiens remain a team to target on the futures board as long as they continue to be undervalued. With Carey Price between the pipes, this is a team that can go off at any moment.
