The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will host this weekend’s Truist Championship and its loaded field led by defending tournament champion and 2025 Masters champion Rory McIlroy in the event known formerly as the Wells Fargo Championship.
McIlroy closed with a 6-under 65 in the final round of last year’s tournament to close out his win with flourish, closing out the back nine with a pair of eagles and a pair of birdies to blow past Xander Schauffele who’d entered the final round as the leader, and win the tournament by five strokes.
This Week on the PGA Tour
As a no-cut signature event, there’s a very exciting filed of players this year as Truist steps in as the new title sponsor, signing a seven-year agreement, and it’s going down in Philadelphia due to Quail Hollow hosting the PGA Championship later in the month. This event will return to Charlotte beginning in 2026.
McIlroy has won this tournament four times before, all at Quail Hollow. This will be his first solo start since completing his career Grand Slam at the Masters in April. We last start him pairing with Shane Lowry in a T12 finish at the Zurich Classic.
With this event playing out over Mother’s Day weekend, with the final round taking place on the day itself, coverage of the event will shine the light on mothers, and the players will be able to find added motivation with this focus.
One notable player who will be on the sidelines for this signature event is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who will skip this event as he opts instead to focus on his preparation for the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club. Scheffler will be back for the PGA Championship.
We’ll likely see Scheffler again in one of the notable tournaments that follow – the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial Tournament in the subsequent weeks. Scheffler hasn’t skipped the Charles Schwab Challenge since 2019, finishing inside the top-three in each of his last three appearances. He’s also the defending champion of the Memorial Tournament, which will itself be the seventh signature event on the PGA calendar.

Matsuyama’s is a name every golf fan knows, but many would surprised to learn he’s won 11 PGA Tour titles. His most recent victory kicked off the season at the Sentry back in January.
He has five top-25 finishes since that win in Hawaii, indicating another breakthrough could be in the cards in the near future.

Harman won this tournament back in 2017 but we can’t put too much stock in that as it also wasn’t played at Quail Hollow. We can however look at his recent form which includes a win at the Valero Texas Open last month and a T3 at the RBC Heritage in his last start.

English is another player who already has a win on the year, and that too saw him break out of a quality field to clinch the title at Torrey Pines. He’s coming off a T30, T18, T12 stretch which includes the Masters, and his name should be a fixture near the top of the leaderboard this weekend as well.
