The PGA Tour’s Opening Drive continues this week with the first event of the 2025 season that features a full field, with 144 players set to tee it up at Waialae Country Club in Hawaii.
This tournament is also the first of the year where players will earn points towards Aon Swing 5 to try and qualify for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
The Sony Open will mark the season debuts of some of the biggest stars in the game today, with many of the game’s top players making the short trip from Kapalua to Honolulu for the Hawaiian double.
This Week on the PGA Tour
Hideki Matsuyama is among the players set to play both legs in Hawaii. He’ll be hopeful the luck and all the birdies he had at The Sentry last weekend will carry over. Matsuyama has had success in this event, winning the 2022 Sony Open in a playoff. He opened 2025 with that win at Kapalua after carding a 35-under 257. He’s one of six former champions in the field this week.
Roughly half of this week’s field played last week in the first Hawaiian event of the year. Among them is Canadian Corey Conners who has four top-15 finishes at Waialae in six starts here. He finished T5 at Kapalua a week ago.
American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Presidents Cup International Team member Byeong Hun An are in the field this week after losing to Grayson Murray in a playoff here a year ago.
Murray emerged from victorious from that trio after they eached finished at 17-under 263. Murray hit a wedge to 3 feet on his final hole on Sunday to get into the playoff, and sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole for his first win on Tour in over six years.
Thomas Detry is coming off a T5 in his tournament debut at Kapalua. Another young player to watch is Michael Thorbjornsen, who will be making his season debut. Thorbjornsen finished No. 1 on the 2024 PGA Tour University Ranking and had three top-10 finishes in 11 Tour starts a year ago.

Coming off a record showing at Kapalua, it’s hard to ignore Matsuyama at what’s a fair price for the betting favorite.
