The PGA Tour returns to Silvis, Illinois this week and TPC Deere Run for the annual edition of the John Deere Classic. Notably, this is the final event stateside before the top players head overseas for the Scottish Open and then the Open Championship.
Moreover, this event is the 30th of 36 regular season tournaments on the PGA Tour’s 2025 FedExCup schedule and presents players with one of their final opportunities to cement eligibility for the FedExCup Playoffs. Defending champion Davis Thompson is among those in the field this week, returning to the site of his first PGA Tour victory.
In addition, John Deere is one of the longest-running title sponsors on the PGA Tour calendar. The agriculture equipment manufacturer recently agreed to extend its sponsorship through 2030, according to an announcement released just last week.
This Week on the PGA Tour
It isn’t unusual for us to see major championship winners take some time off to enjoy their victory. However, J.J. Spaun stuck with his commitment to the Travelers Championship and played last week, immediately after his U.S. Open win. That said, Spaun has now elected to pull his name from the commitment list for this event.
Following his U.S. Open win, Spaun jumped up the world rankings by 17 spots, climbing to No. 8 overall. That ranking made him the second-highest player in this week’s field, behind only Collin Morikawa. As a result, Morikawa now stands as the lone player in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking teeing it up this week.
Next in line is world No. 11 Hideki Matsuyama, who joins Morikawa among the most elite in the field. Together, they’re part of a group of 12 players ranked inside the world’s top 50 participating in this event. In total, the field includes 10 major championship winners and 67 PGA Tour winners with a combined 195 career victories.
2025 John Deere Classic Free Picks Coming Right Up
Akshay Bhatia also returns this week looking for redemption. He sat atop the leaderboard for most of last year’s event before a crushing three-putt on the final hole dropped him into a tie for second and handed the win to Davis Thompson. Even so, Bhatia remains a threat on this layout and should be motivated after last year’s heartbreak.
While this is only the seventh edition of the tournament, which debuted in 2019, the Detroit Golf Club boasts a far longer legacy. Originally established in 1899, the club features two courses: the North and South layouts. This event will be played on the North Course, a classic Donald Ross design that uses natural terrain and tree-lined fairways to demand precision.
Consequently, shots off the tee will carry added importance this week. Players who can find fairways and avoid trouble will have a clear edge. Expect driving accuracy to be a major factor in deciding who lifts the trophy on Sunday.

Overall, Poston has been very consistent this year, missing only two cuts and yielding some strong results, including a T5 at the PGA Championship. In fact, last year he fired four rounds in the 60s at this very tournament. As a result, this could be the year he finally puts it all together at this event.

So far, Thorbjornsen doesn’t yet have a win on Tour, but this is as good a week as any for the former Stanford Cardinal to break through. Moreover, he enters the week in solid form after a T4 at last week’s John Deere Classic and a recent T2 at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
Additionally, he was T2 here last year after a T17 finish in 2023, showing a clear upward trend.

Historically, Yu has been solid at this event, finishing T20 here last year and T6 in 2023. In fact, he won his first PGA Tour title at the Sanderson Farms Championship last year, proving he can emerge in a softer field like this one.
